Why are there so many stiffs in skiing?

Mr.BishopI'm totally confused. Regularly I see/hear comments of "He's a bad role model", "People should wear helmets to be safe", "That athlete shouldn't smoke", "This drinking is going to hurt the children", etc....

What the fuck?

I don't get it. Unless I'm way out of the loop, I've never heard the same kind of shit out of Snowboarding, Skateboarding, Music and basically everything other than church groups....

So what gives?

But, people take park skiing WAY too seriously. In mammoth last season I was having a morning beer and noticed a group stretching out (also smart) and said something like "morning boys, stretchin 'er out eh!?" and they just mean mugged me like how dare you speak to someone else in the park.

Not trying to pick a fight. I just think that there is some merit to caution. Ex. Drinking is ok, just don't go trying new tricks while being blackout drunk.

SamefaceThere are lots of stiffs in skiing because, as has been said a number of times already, people who ski generally come from privileged white conservative christian backgrounds where these things are frowned upon.

Of course I'm employing quite absolutist logic here but for the majority of people this is the case.

It's our job as adults to respond to these kids who say "is Bishop/whoever really setting a good example here by doing x?" by trying to get them to question their own beliefs. Why do you think it's wrong to drink/smoke? Why do you wear/not wear a helmet? et cetera.

TL;DR rich immature children who haven't been taught critical thinking are the reason there are stiffs in skiing.

Then following it by justifying you not wearing a helmet because "that's how you grew up" and saying you won't encourage your son to wear one once he's "of age" is ignorant as fuck. The amount of old school, professional, and all around unreal skiers I know that that have smacked their noggins while not wearing one is so high. Just because you "didn't wear one racing back in YOUR day." Doesn't mean shit. Those days are past. Back in the day people didn't wear seat belts, fall arrests, helmets in hockey and football, the list goes on and on. I hope to god you never crash yourself into a coma and leave your kids with a vegetable for a father. Get some fucking sense. Helmets are there for a reason. If you've got nothing to lose then have at er. But you wouldn't be hurting just yourself.

As for booze, sure have some beers, I'm guilty of keeping some scotch in my flask on the hill some days but I could never forgive myself if I indulged too much, fucked up and took out someone else.

24 year old son here, who has been skiing for 23 years, in 22 countries and grew up in Banff AB. Race/big mountain/freestyle/park/backcountry. My old man has been a heli ski guide for 35 years as well as sailor, pilot, and rally driver. His world is a far cry from "vanilla" and he would beat my ass if he ever caught me shredding without a helmet.

Schmaelzle...That's pretty much exactly what you're doing when you lump in wearing a helmet with living the straight-edge life or whatever. Not wearing a helmet is not the same kind of choice as smoking weed or sleeping with someone before the wedding. You're as free to make that decision as any other, but let's be honest here - you aren't winning anything or showing anyone up by dropping in on a line without a helmet.

Nothing wrong with helmets but if you think its necessary and even smart to wear one on a 50 degree spring day in April (which your post indicates) when shorts and a T are proper ski wear then you're the definition of a stiff that Bishop was ranting about. If your hammered on the mountain the one thing you probably won't do is hit another skiier btw. You might fuck yourself up in the shade not seeing a mogul or some form of bump and you might drop your poles off the lift laying down but your not going to nail someone just cuase your drunk unless you try to do it intentionally and its a friend or something.

You survived largely unharmed, as did a lot of people, but if you think action sports is where it was in the 80's you're out of your fuckin' mind. People go faster, bigger, and get more tech now than they ever did - and at increasingly younger ages. You do realize its is such an individual choice and opinion that there is no correct side to it right? All I want to say is to each their own. Theres no reason one person should be telling me what to do any another should not. If you believe helmets are the savior of all skiing related health issues, then your dilusional. Im sorry to tell you this but behavioral economics notes that since the introduction of the mandatory seatbelt law, people drive more recklessly and pedestrian deaths related to driving have increased because of seatbelts. Similar thing happens with helmets. Or vice versa, without helmets, perhaps you ski more cautiously, but Im just brainstorming here.

Bottom line is you are a fuck and need to rethink how seriously you take yourself. And Id bet you listen to the mainstream media too
