One of Indiana Universitys frat was recently suspended after a video of sexual hazing surfaced on the internet...

supposedly it was an initiated member, so it wasn't hazing. really gross nonetheless... still don't understand why this is cause for national outrage though. everyone involved was over 18, and none of this appeared to be forced. not a great look for frats, but people need to stop getting offended over stupid shit

As fucked up as it is, there's nothing to be really be outraged about. Yeah it's kinda disgusting and every person in that room should probably have a good hard look at themselves but as long as it was consensual the frat really shouldn't be suspended.

Two things:
1. My best bud from high school goes to IU and his roommate rushed that frat this fall. My buddy asked his roommate if he was a part of it cuz it looks like him in the video, and he just didnt respond... lololol

2. Frats are really dumb. I don't get it at all, and don't give me that charity reason it's total BS.

3. Random story, going back to the fucked up things they do, my roommates dad rushed this frat at MSU and had to buy a puppy, raise it for a year and then drown it in the river by campus, needless to say the guy had a soul and walked. (with the doge of course)

I'm part of a small, private chapter fraternity and whenever I see stuff like this it never ceases to blow my mind. The pledging process is usually kept secret for the fact that if everyone knew what went on, there would be no spark of interest in it and it would kinda take away of the mystique of pledging itself.

With that being said, private events weren't even close to the same scale as this. It mostly consisted of legitimate team building shit followed by beer drinking and socializing... you know, stuff that actually builds a sense of brotherhood and community. Then, the next morning (which usually was either sat or sun), we'd wake up as a group and drag and our hungover asses to a food shelf or charity drive and put in community service to build our resumes, work experience, and P.R.

I know there are plenty of people who hate fraternities, and after seeing more and more leaks like this, I really can't blame people. I'm not going to deny that there are some fucked up organizations out there that do stuff like this, but in that, we take pride in being a testament that not all fraternities are the same.

As far as I see it, fraternities probably won't be around too much longer. There has been a clear drop in people pledging since incidents like this have come to light. In some cases, it might be for the better, but if my chapter is affected by this, it will be sad to see it dissolve.

Its paying for friends to fit in.

Hey I get it being a 19 year old sophomore who can't go to the bars makes you want to be part of the big parties. I almost joined ATO (this one) or SAE (racist one) glad I never did. Eating multiple sticks of butter to have friends and being degraded wouldn't have been chill I know what people went through to get into them.


Frat defenders are just the dorky kids in the frat who's only claim to fame or popularity is being in the frat anyone cool is well over it by the time they are seniors.


Surprised more people who quit during rush don't snitch on the frats for what they do to you thats what is shocking not that sheep do it for friends but that the people who get fucked with and don't get in take it without getting some revenge.

It's like asking why any organization exists. An organization allows a group to profit from the combined resources and talent. Same deal.

Not saying you can't. But at least for me, I'd never thought about volunteering a food drives or shelters before I joined. I ended up pledging my junior year, but for the first two I pretty much was living what I thought was the college dream- drinking and partying non-stop while scraping by in school during the week. I would run into a lot of the guys either at parties or on campus and I even played hockey with a few in high school so I figured it wouldn't hurt to figure out what the hell they did all the time.

I sat down with a couple buddies and got the lowdown on what they stood for and what their schedule looked like and I ultimately decided that I could be using my time outside of class a lot better. I honestly don't think I would have had the drive to get up on Sunday mornings to pack dinners for the homeless or help put on charity events if it wasn't for 10-15 other guys that went with me. Overall it was cool to find a group a guys and girls (sororities) that wanted to have fun throughout college but at the same time, pushed each other to meet grades and build their resumes at the same time.

I know tons of people who have no problem getting up and being productive at the crack of dawn, but for someone like me who struggles to motivate most days of the week, Greek life has definitely helped me get out and apply myself in areas I really never thought I'd get in involved with.

Just because somebody chooses to join a frat doesn't mean there lame. Frats get a bad rap but its not like all of them is doing the shit you see in the news. It's a lame few that ruin it for the many.

To people in the thread. I encourange you if your going to college to look into maybe pledging a frat. It's a great time. You wont be dissapointed.

Only issue I have with fraternities is some of the group violence I've seen. My buddy and I had to break up a fight next door to us a couple of years ago because a 16 year old got into the party, got drunk, and decided to steal one of the house paddles. Well, they chased him into the yard, tackled him, and just started stomping him. One of the kids grabs the paddle and goes to crack it over the back of his head when my buddy grabs him and talks them all down while I check out the kid. He is obviously concussed (at the very least), so we find a couple of his friends and have them take him to the ER.

All of this was because a 16 year old stole a shitty wood paddle with some letters hot-glued on it.

Obviously, this isn't the norm, but it wasn't the only one I saw during my undergrad years, and I'm sure a few of you have heard at least one horror like this.

That is so fucked. I hate to be "this kid" but the people who spend all their time in college partying, getting fucked up, and doing nothing but socializing, are gonna have a huge reality check when they look back at college and realized they absolutely wasted their parents money. They are also gonna have a tough time getting a job with a 2.1 GPA and a suspension on their resume. While I certainly like to have fun and yes occasionally get fucked up with my friends, I'm a pretty academic kid so for me, doing something this stupid is just really fucked.

Thats pretty lame if you think you should be proud of that in the real world. I'm not saying that i can or cannot shotgun a beer. But your just making yourself seem like a fucking tool. If you think that you are better for being able to party hard every weekend, while having laid 35 chicks within the same night, your really someone that people should be proud of, No, your full of shit. As for greek life, it can be fun, educational, and helpful depending on your circumstances.

Being at a school that was 35% greek, social lives were pretty much only possible through greek life (that is unless LAN parties and video games and shit are considered part of a social life). Not all fraternities are the same. They vary by fraternity to fraternity, chapter to chapter and school to school. ATO at Georgia Tech is going to be very different from ATO at Michigan.

Being in a fraternity is not paying for friends. Look at what dues pay for. Most of it is fun social trips, others are for house maintenance, parties, philantrophy, school related functions(homecoming, greek week), etc. If that is paying for friends, then you are paying for friends when you spend money to go on trips with them, eat out with them, etc.
