putting guns in school is just a bullshit idea plain and simple. Having a gun in a room with 25 Children? Thats a terrific way to get kids caught in crossfire or even better, arm a criminal that overpowered the original handler.

If Trump is so eager to put guns in rooms full of children, why won't he let people bring guns into his own fucking hotels?

Teacher comes into class, couple little kids in the back make it their years mission to break him/her. Teacher at lunch goes back to their shitty 98 Corolla, slumped over the wheel crying and asking to themselves why the students hate them?

And then when a student gets a hold of a gun when teachers are out of class, or a teacher loses their mind / doesn't know how to use a gun properly and gets more people killed, the solution is what? Now we give the kids guns!

What, blow trillions of dollars training security sniper teachers? Your education system is already in the shitter, and you want to add another variable to the equation and not only have your teachers attempt to instruct a curriculum, but be cops too? Yes, lets give Mrs. Mayes, the 73 year old sweet little old lady with the same salary as a garbage man a fucking gun so that when razy Joe comes in shooting people up and the place is in a panic, SHE'S READY TO SAVE THE DAY!

Like I said, it's more likely that some 14 year old smart ass gets a hold of that gun than her "saving the day like a true American hero"

Lol you guys are a total fucking mess. Just have another civil war already so you can start the restructuring. It's been too long.

Pretty dumb to give them to the teachers if you ask me. They're teachers, not cowboys who sign up to fight crime as a part of their job. Instead there should be a few resource officers who are armed in the school all the time.

Just my 2 cents, Educators with significant training in emergency management, active shooter scenarios, and Weapon handling alongside in-depth mental evaluation wouldn't be a bad thing. The liaison of the police department is only armed with a handgun, given pistol armor, and isn't here everyday. police response is at least 5 minutes from the building not including any procedure to clearing and entering the school they must take. Having someone properly trained to use a Weapon and given a evaluation before receiving the weapon makes sense in my mind. Its undeniably sad that we have to even consider it, but Im not going to rely on a single person with a handgun that isn't here everyday to protect the lives of 2000 people in a massive building from an assailant with a rifle or Body armor. even a single person with a knife can overwhelm and cause massive casualties in a public space (Evident from the Subway attacks in china)

....Just my opinion

How about instead of training teachers how to use and handle guns, we train teachers and staff to pay better attention to their kids. Kids don't just 'snap' and decide to shoot a bunch of people. They are on a pathway with all kinds of risk factors. Maybe it's issues at home, bullying, school performance, mental health/depression/self-esteem issues, etc.

If teachers actually engaged with their students, they would likely pick up on changes in baseline behaviour, attitude, etc, get the kid some help and stop a school shooting long before it reaches that point.

I don't know. Maybe that's just more work than dealing with the aftermath of a school shooting?

Dude, the system is so fucked and there's so little money in providing services for students struggling with things that they shouldn't have to that it's in no way the teacher's fault much of the time. I worked in a school last year, didn't teach, but was in a classroom with a teacher everyday and we had a student who was exactly the kind of kid you're talking about. Rarely came to school, and when he did he wouldn't do any work, would start fights, abuse classmates verbally, call the teacher a bitch (this was 4th grade), etc. We went through and filled out all the paper work to get this student a counselor and tutor to work with him one on one. Literally nothing ever came out of it. Didn't hear back for a few weeks, so we asked about it again, and were told it would take a few months to process and get something figured out. Nothing ever happened. There are so many more kids who need help than we have money, resources, and specialists devoted to trying to help them.

I get that. I work with tough kids everyday. I've worked in classrooms. Sometimes all it takes is just having an actual conversation with a kid. That can have more of an impact that making all the referrals in the world. Also, just being aware of baseline behaviour is huge. If the kid you described's normal behaviour is what you were saying, wouldn't being aware of drastic changes in behaviour point to something serious happening? Maybe he makes a threat to the teacher everyday, but nothing happens. There's your baseline. If he starts making fake knives or guns, the baseline is elevated. He gets caught with a knife. Increase again. Obviously this kid is on a pathway to doing something serious.

Just being aware of stuff like that is so huge, but so overlooked. I can pretty much guarantee there were warning signs leading up to every school shooting, but people either weren't paying attention or didn't know what to look for.

I'm not trying to blame teachers, but surely trying to improve that system and preventing something from happening in the first place is going to be more effective than arming everyone?

I turn 18 a month before the election, my parents are not really staunch, but pretty conservative conservatives and always ask me who i'm going to vote for. I could call myself a moderate conservative at best. I enjoy the left because of their free-minded thinking and how staunchly they defend civil rights for all, but most of the candidates are a few steps short of socialism, which isn't my shit.

Honestly right now me picking a candidate for either side would consist of me picking one out of a hat. Everyone on that ballot is so upsettingly stupid i'm beside myself.

For sure, I 100% agree that improving the system is the best way to go, I just think that the problem of missing these early warning signs goes way beyond teachers not caring and not doing their jobs, and has much more to do with the limited resources school districts have and how they're distributed. At least that's what my experience has shown me. I've seen so many examples of teachers who start feeling hopeless and stop making the same effort for their students just because they've been at it year after year seeing kids who need help and trying to get it to them without seeing any kind of results because the support system just isn't there.

The school I worked at had one counselor. And he was only there two or three days a week because he was also the only counselor at another elementary school. The waitlist to see him was literally two or three months long. And in the meantime the classroom teacher is the only one working with the student, as well as trying to look out for 25 to 30 others, many of whom also have their own issues and also needing more support than any classroom teacher could ever hope to provide while still doing his/her job and actually trying to teach.

One of the most insane things about America to me is the way that every parent claims they want their child getting a good education, and yet we look down on teachers so much, and the education sector as a whole.

Okay not saying i totally agree but thinking about it and IF schools somehow got a good amount of extra money why not have a mini safe with fingerprint unlock and a gun with just one clip, kids cant get in and it is quick access, at least there would be a chance for the teacher to shoot someone killing the kids. Also everyone saying the teachers would go insane and shoot kids is fucking dumb. Teachers go through background checks already, yes we would have to have a week or two on gun basics and make the background checks a little more thorough but for the most part the idea isnt terrible if you look at all the options... getting the money for the schools would be rough, but anythings bettter than a dude rolling in class with 4 aks killing 30 kids, i hate that this is actually a big topic in our world today, the fuck man

This. The masculine and feminine ideals promoted by many adults in our society and through advertising also aren't doing kids who feel they don't look like, think like, feel like these ideals tell them they should any good at all.

So many of these mass shooters would never exist in the first place if people were just fucking nicer to each other.

tons of schools have resource officers with weapons on them. How is that going to stop a kid from unloading a full clip into a classroom? The root of the problem is not a lack of security. One major reason is our culture's way of making people feel like outsiders.

I just watched this movie yesterday:


It's based on the story of the Columbine shooting and is pretty heavy stuff but I would recommend it. I don't think there was a time throughout the movie that it felt like more guns would have solved anything.
