Generally you get what you pay for.

I find the key is to buy things that will last multiple seasons. High quality outerwear with lifetime warranties in simple basic colors can last 5-10 years. Patterned or off color outerwear goes in and out of style quickly, and the brands that chase fashion generally don't have the quality and durability of brands like Patagonia or Arcteryx. Cheaper to buy a $500 jacket and keep it for 7 years than buy a new $300 jacket every year.

Goggles: buy Oakley, take care of them and they will last a decade.

The one thing that does cost is boots. If you ski hard boots will last about 80-120 days. That means new boots every two to four years. This sucks because it is one place you really want to be willing to spend some money to get the right boot.

Skis: if you ski park you will go through skis. Sorry. Plenty of $300 skis though if you are willing to break cheaper skis instead of expensive skis.

Truth. Also most don't wax their skis after 1-3 times. Helps base maintenance A LOT. My last boots I had for 8 years they were great. Use my equipment till it is on its last leg. Buy during summer sales. Got new boots (top of the line freeride boots) and skis for $350 this summer combined.

Sick of hearing about park rats (who most of the time suck anyways) complain about cracked edges, etc...of course you slam your skis into metal all day.

Keep in mind that a "warranty" covers manufacturer's defects, not normal wear and tear. My mom skiing 150 days on a pair of boots is very different from an athlete putting 150 days on a pair of boots. Her boots will look brand new while the athlete's boots will look like they've been put through a meat grinder. The latter isn't a problem with quality, just constant overly-aggressive skiing that will wear out even the highest quality materials the industry has to offer. Not properly caring for the gear will only exacerbate/accelerate that timeline.

I have skied most of the major brand's boots. 100-120 days and they ski noticeably different than they do on day one. The plastic will lose its elasticity, stiffness, and precision. It's a fact of life.

Now touring 150 days and skiing pow, sure not the same thing.
