Digital Setup help!

JakeSmithSo I haven't been shooting much lately, and that is mostly due to a lack of time and motivation, but I also blame it on the fact that I'm starting to agree with the people who told me that film would be more expensive in the long run than digital. So I need so help making decisions

My current setup
Olympus OM-1n black, bought from Keh in BGN condition, minimal brassing
28mm f3.5, 50mm f1.8, 135mm f3.5 all in BGN condition

Pentax ME, BGN condition, a few small nicks here and there
Random worthless Vivitar 35mm, 50mm f2, 135mm f3.5

Mamiya RZ67 Pro, Pretty good condition, I think I spent around $900 for the whole setup
wide, mid, mid-long lenses, cnat remember exactly which ones
2 backs, gossen luna pro sbc, red and orange filter, Burton pack, manfrotto 3021b pro legs, bogen 3030 head.

Voigtlander Vito CSR, decent condition, broken meter, pretty much worthless

Canon Eos Rebel 2000, fair condition, again pretty much worthless
28-80mm f3.5-5.6 II



So what should I do? I haven't set out a budget yet, but just keep in mind that I'm poor as shit right now and most of my money I earn will have to go towards school. I've been thinking of a few options and I'm looking for some more suggestions from you guys

1) Sell Everything, get a canon DSLR and lenses etc, get a older EF mount body just to have the option of film.

2) Sell everything but the RZ67 setup, get a less expensive DSLR setup, or maybe a sony Nex 5

3) Sell everything but the ME or OM-1 setup, Get a DSLR

4) ????

I know those all seem pretty vague, sorry.


I had some other random questions too:
Canon 50d vd 5d classic? Is full frame worth the older tech of the 5d? Finding a cheap wide angle for full frame would probably be cheaper than say a 11-16 or something of the like.

I don't know anything about nikon, but I don't want to count them out. What would be a camera similar to the 40d or 50d in price/value and features. Is there a cheap-ish full frame nikon dslr similar to the 5d classic out there? Is it pretty easy to get good bang for buck lenses like the canon 28-135mm for example? I like that nikon has never changed their mount and I really like vintage glass.

Oh yeah and all this is strictly photography, I don't have any interest/care for video.

d700 is similar ish (albeit a few hundred more expensive) and they have the 28-200 3.5-5.6 which is better than the 28-135 canon so there's that

First, shameless plug. I am selling a 5d classic (and I can include a 40mm f2.8 stm, memory cards, battery and charger, and the strap).

The nikon equivalent of a 5d classic would probably be the d700. I haven't used one, but my understanding is that it is slightly more robust and is more similar to a 5d and 1ds2 hybrid. There are advantages and disadvantages, and if you are seriously interested, there is probably someone on here who can tell you more. The major disadvantage (for me) compared to canon is that nikon uses a longer flange distance, so many legacy lenses that can be adapted to canon can't be adapted to nikon.

I really like the 5d. Compared to the 7d, the 5d files look sharper (at 100%) and overall just better. The 5d gives files a certain "look" that has led to its ongoing popularity. After using full frame (5dc, 6d), I have no interest in using an aps-c crop sensor. The 7d has 18mp vs 12mp for the 5d, and the 5d files just look so much better. The 7d af is better, but if you want really good tracking, go for a 1d3. The sensor is very good, and the AF is just about the best you can get. I also read that you want something reasonable sized, and that is the reason I no longer have a 1d mark ii n. The 1 series are great cameras, but if you don't need the ultrafast AF/burst and weather sealing, you are better of getting the 5d (for the better sensor) and using a case made of 2" of concrete. The 1 series is that big/heavy.

If I were you, I would sell the 35mm stuff, everything except the Olympus setup.

For the rz67, consider the rb67. I prefer that the rb67 has no batteries, and if I upgrade to the rz, I can still use my lenses (rb lenses work on rb and rz bodies, rz lenses only work on rz bodies). I only shoot my rb67 occasionally, but to me it is worth keeping with 1 lens for landscapes. If you can live with the limits of the rb, you can save a bit of cash. Also, only get lenses you will use. There is no reason to have a full kit just to have it.

For digital, get a 5d, and then adapters for your olympus lenses. If you want a fast wide, you can use the tokina 11-16 at 16mm, or look for a used rokinon 24mm f1.4. I would also recommend picking up a 70-200L lens (whichever suits your needs and budget). I have used the 70-200 f2.8L, and it is such a good match for a full frame body. At least try using one, because I feel that it is an awesome enough pairing that you are missing out by not having it. Later on you can pick up a canon film body for cheap.

TL;DR
Keep your olympus stuff, consider an rb67, buy my 5d, olympus adapters, a fast wide, and a 70-200, and then consider an ef film body (no real reason to buy without having a few good EF lenses).

Unless your working a darkroom, good colour film just gets pricey and Kirk's Mastin Labs presets are scary close.

Selling the RZ isn't one of my favorite options. I was considering getting rid of at least some of my 35mm stuff to kinda force myself to use the RZ more and the 35mm stuff would be replaced by digital as my go-to camera. The RZ is my favorite camera but it just got completely ignored recently due to me not getting out much and I would always just pick up a 35mm instead when going out. I also feel like I'm being much more careful about my shots with 120, so the fewer frames per roll is definitely negated by how much I typically would waste 35mm.

I haven't looked at the x100t or xt1 just because they are way out of my price range, and I like the way a beefy camera feels when I'm shooting over the convenience of a smaller camera.

Also, are there any other places I should be looking for a 5dc? I've been looking on keh, but that's about it, I don't know of any other sites to look on.

I would just check your local craigslist or POTN/FM, all the usual places.

I was going to suggest selling the gear he doesn't love and buying a Nikon D600 setup of some form... But I had no idea the 5D was that cheap. That's pretty insane.

If you're saying the X cameras suggested above are way out of your price range, I dont know what to tell you... the 5D might be the only option if you can find one that cheap.

I wanna say $500 ish. So that would get me a 5d body and batteries, maybe a cheaper all around zoom like a 28-135, and some adapters for my OM glass.

The words "cheap" and "zoom" should never ever go together.
