Cyclist hit by car, throws keys down drain

In Toronto a cyclist was riding along and a car made a quick left turn and hit the cyclist. The cyclist got pissed and reached into the persons car, grabbed their keys, and threw them down a drain and rode off. The cops followed and charged them with mischief. The driver, who is 100% at fault for the accident has not been charged with anything.

Great stuff. More cyclists should get in the habit of doing this when they're hit by cars through no fault of their own.

How the hell did he reach into the car and grab the keys out of the ignition. Thats an insanely messed up thing to do I'm glad he got arrested.

No, cyclist should not get in the habit of being crazy assholes.

It sucks that he was hit, but that doesn't entitle you to fire back like a douchebag.

Thats crazy that the car driver didnt get any penalty, but the biker deserves a little penalty for his reaction

Legally no because it seems like an accident, however if the cyclist actually got injured he can sue, but if the cyclist had enough strength to take the keys from the driver then throw them down the drain and then ride away he probably didn't get hurt.

welll maybe he should have been more attentive because, you know, the road was made for cars to be driven on... not cyclists who think they have have precedence

Accidents happen. More accidents happen when you make yourself much more difficult to see, and hear than the average vehicle on the road. Cyclists like this guy are the reason that so many drivers think poorly of bikers in urban settings. The biker acted like an asshat.

also if the cyclist was able to get up reach into a vehicle to grab the keys and than ride away, it clearly seems like he wasn't hit that hard either

Apparently nobody here has been hit by a car while riding a bike. Now, given it was the driver's fault (which according to the article it may have been) I understand the cyclist's actions. Not saying he was in the right, but it is understandable. I was once hit by a car due to the driver not checking his blind spot before turning. I was fine, but in that instant after the accident all you feel is unchecked anger at the person for being so careless with another's life. I took 10 seconds to chill out because and then talked to the guy about it. But having said that, unless you have been in a situation like that, you don't have much of a place to judge anybody's actions. Maybe 'not a cool move', but a potentially serious accident can cause emotions to run high.

no, we absolutely have the right to judge his actions. And cyclists like that, give all other cyclists a bad image and contribute to the bullshit cyclists have to get from motorists each day.

Look man, all I'm saying is next time you get hit by a car when biking (with the driver being at fault) get back to me with how you reacted. Yeah, what he did was excessive, and I don't like that he did it either, but the feeling of post-accident adrenaline is hard to control. Doesn't matter how chill of a person you think you are.

Perhaps the cyclist should have been more attentive. Perhaps the driver of the car should have been more attentive.

Either way, both cars and bikes have the right to use the road (along with horses, carriages, and other means of legal transportation). Roads existed long before cars, so roads do not exist for the sole purpose of cars to be driven on (but roads have obviously evolved to cater to the needs of cars). Ultimately, both need to abide by the rules & laws of the state.

im well aware of how adrenaline affects my reactions to situations. Doesnt mean i shouldnt be judged harshly for overreacting and being violent.

Okay, I've been in this situation on both a bike and on foot. The dude is a crazy asshole. Case in point: both you and I were angered but did not assault someone and chuck their car keys down the drain.

No problem man if you knew anything about the American legal system you would know it's called a tort which holds people financially liable for personal injury, and torts are separate from criminal law. You probably could have taken a class in high school and learnt that. So glad you found that post so complicated and knowledgeable that you think I'm claiming to be a lawyer.
