Keeping pets in car/tents while camping?

So I bring my cat with me on lots of trips. But usually don't leave him unattended. I've got some camping trips planned soon, I want to bring him with because I take him on hikes and stuff. But I also want to do some MTB rides where I'll be gone for a good chunk of the day, and I don't know what to do with him.

I've left him in the car for 5-6hours in winter when it was like 30-50 out and he just chilled in a bunch of blankets and slept. But I'm more concerned about heat. It'll probably be under 70 when I go, and can park under trees and leave the windows cracked. Just not sure if that'll be enough.

I park my car outside in the sun around here and I'd say it feels like 80 inside when it's a hot day.

Any thoughts? I was thinking of packing a cooler with ice and covering it with some stuff for him to lay on.

I know it's the cool thing to flip shit, break the car window and be a hero when someone leaves their pet in a car for 5 mins to run inside a store. If this were Houston in the middle of the summer, then yes I understand. But fall up in the mountains in the shade? I'd think you would be fine. It's just hard to get any actual advice because animal lovers are fucking insane and think every car turns into an oven.

If you crack all the windows a little bit, and leave him some food and water i guess he should be fine. But chances are someone will consider it animal cruelty and break your windows anyways.

When it's 72 degrees outside the temperature inside your car can heat up to 116 degrees within an hour... and when it's 80 degrees outside the temperature inside your car can heat up to 99 degrees within 10 minutes. Rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car. Is it that necessary to bring your cat everywhere you go? I think your cat can hold it down at home just fine.

Where are you hearing this? Im sure if it's a combination of all the right factors, that kind of Increase might be possible, but under normal circumstances I really doubt it'd get anywhere near that bad. I've had my car parked in direct sunlight all summer when it's been around 90 and the interior temperature hardly seems any higher. Maybe it's my specific car, or that it's a very dry heat, but I don't think it's increased anywhere near as much as people say is possible.

I was thinking mid 80's but it actually got up to 95F. Outside temp has risen to 72F

The thermometer was placed hanging low from the drivers seat, about as far away from any direct sunlight coming through the window i could find.

Dogs suck so I got a cat. And yes I take him on hikes. Usually off leash, he just follows right behind me. He does better off leash than a lot of dogs I've seen.

I just did a little experiment today, was 75. Parked in a well shaded area, windows cracked, came back after an hour, sat in the car for a good 10 mins and if be lying if I said I could feel a difference inside.
Still, I'll probably wait till the temps drop a little more if I'm gonna leave him in a car just to be safe.

He's spent hours outside in the snow and 20 degree temps with the option of comin in a doggy door and he doesn't. Inside a car out of the elements with blankets and a winter sleeping bag to lay in isnt shit compared to that. He's a tough mofo

The biggest benefit I can see to owning a cat instead of a dog is that you can leave cats home alone for much longer periods of time and they're ok. Having worked in a vets office for years I've seen too many owners bringing in the dead pets they left in the car, thinking they'd be fine and it wasn't too hot...so personally I'd rather just leave him home and not be worried about it. Plus he'd probably be happier at home than stuck in a car.

more like skinny skis suck so i bought powder skis, and yes i take them into the backcountry.
my cats like an upgrade from a dog, he's better on hikes at 10 months old than most dogs ever get.

Leave him at home and have a friend/relative come over every day to take care of him, or leave him at a friend's/relative's house. Even "nice" "mild" weather is very dangerous to leave a cat unattended in a vehicle. And what if you get hurt biking and can't make it back to your car or tent for a long time? Then he could die.

It sounds like you have broken a few windows to "save" a dog that was trapped inside while the owner was in a shop for 5 min.

Nah, but ironically I've only seen 2 cats locked in empty car. Never a dog which is crazy because I know that's most common.

Ha no way, i dont bring him when im with other people. I hate that too, had many camping trips almost ruined thanks to somebodys shitty dog.
