Opinion on "Small World" format?

Many of you guys have already seen Level 1's new film "Small World" or heard talk of it here on Newschoolers. We attended the premier event here in Salt Lake City and covered it in our new episode:

Most of the talk about this year's film is on the new format they used, centering segments around trips and locations instead of the normal rider based segments. What do you guys think of this new format?

It's not a new format, not even for Level 1. Has everyone forgot about Realtime? Every segment was location based. And the segments were in chronological order too. And it worked, it was a great movie.
Small world didn't impress me as much as Realtime, there weren't too many ''banger'' shots IMO, but it was an alright movie. Definitely better than many of the segments in Less though.

i loved real time, i think location segs definitely give a crew vibe to it as opposed to riders filming for their own seggys

I know I will get ripped apart because this is newschoolers and you must conform to every popular ideology, but I didn't like the format. I prefer when it's split up by location. It gives the individual rider their own chance to shine. Just my 2 cents.

I haven't watched it yet but it worked for Blizzard of Ahhhhhs so I assume any faults may not be in the format but other editing choices.

I've always thought the "regular" way of rider based segments just feels like a bunch of season edits linked together.

I think its a decent concept, its not "blow your mind" stuff like TGRs flick was but its still some fun skiing to watch. Y'all are too critical of ski movies, they aren't trying to win Oscars lol.

I thought it was a great throwback to Realtime that also shows the incredible highs and terrible lows of trips. Segments that featured goofing around, serious urban, risky backcountry, amazing big mountain lines, and the pains of being defeated by a feature -- all wrapped up into one film. It was a breath of fresh air in ski films (even though it isn't a new style of film by any means), I really enjoyed it, personally.

I like it but didn't like it. I wish there was a little bit of a mix. The lack of urban I think made me dislike it a little bit, and there weren't many bangers that stood out either.

i was more impressed they dropped the movie the same day they dropped the trailer. editing by location isn't new.

it should be both, i really liked the Japan trip segment in Sunny, even though all the other segments were rider based.

loved it being split up by location it gives you a way better understanding of the shots and the vibes of the crew and area its being shot in. you still get to see all the best shots of your favorite riders they are just not separated.

Idk if this bothers you guys or not, but I was kinda bummed that they put out, IMO, the most banger shots on instagram. Some of berman's shots I saw on insta were nuts and they either weren't in the movie or I wasn't as impressed with it. It really was still a dope movie, just wish they would leave the banger tricks for the actual movie.

I would have preferred a rider segment format personally. There wasn't the same build up to the final banger at the end of each person's seggy that you get from a more traditional format. Maybe that's because the movie was lacking bangers in general, however.

Regardless of the format, I thought Small World was one of Level 1's weaker offerings in current memory. Other than the Brighton segment, Whistler jump sesh, and the Minnesota segment (which I'm totally biased toward since I'm from MN), I can't say I was too impressed with much of the movie.

Overall i thought the movie was sick, everyone killed it.

Only disappointment was that there were no seggies similar to Berman's seg in Less. I like that they switched up the format but that segment gives me chills every time I watch it.

Lafa talks more shit than the drop. Sometimes I back what they say but a lot of it is uncalled for. I feel like they're just worried something they don't like will go too far. I'd like to see an interview with Lafa done by the drop.

Nimbus has done that for a while now. I think most of their videos, even back to Hunting Yeti, were parts based on location and not rider segments.

I think it's a good format, makes you notice the individuality and creativity of each skier and how they utilize the spot differently.

I'm a huge fan of Small World's format. It's so much easier to become engrossed in the film instead of viewing a lot of (really sick) edits that don't come together as much. Also, the locations Level 1 shot at for Small World were awesome, and the location-based format makes it easer to recognize that.

As a filmmaker I can say that the new format is by far the better way to tell story. To be honest in the past I have had trouble paying attention when it had individual segments. With this I can pay attention the whole time and I felt more connected.

And yes Small World is definitely worth it

Although I know next to nothing about videography, I knew that Small World was sick. It was incredibly fun to watch. The location based segments only added to the fun of watching their movies.
