What Lens?

Hi Guys,

I recently decided to go full frame and upgraded to a 5dii from my t4i. Picked it up at 16k shutter clicks with the 24-105 f4L for $1100 (cad), just couldn't say no at that price. A lot of the glass that I had before will transfer over, but my low light go to lens (tokina 11-16 f2.8) doesnt really work on the 5dii.

I need a low light wider lens and im looking for a few suggestions, dont really care if its a prime or a zoom but i would prefer something wider than 24mm and f2.8 or faster.

my budget is $600 ish (cad) - would be willing to spend more for the right one

my current glass collection:
tokina 11-16 f2.8
tokina 12-24 f4
canon 24-105 f4L
canon 70-200 f4L
canon 18-135 f3.5-5.6 stm

give me your suggestions :)

Here are some suggested lenses wider than 24mm at f/2.8:

Sigma 15mm f/2.8

Being that you now own a full frame system, here's what I would do to recreate your glass selection. Both the Canon 24-105 and 70-200 f/4 are great lenses. Your two Tokina lenses are both designed for APS-C sensors. I would get rid of both of them (unless you own a second camera that has an APS-C sized sensor). The 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 I would get rid of as well. Being that you do mainly video work, you always want to have a lens that can keep a consistent aperture throughout the entire lens. Also you have two great lenses that will fill those focal length gaps.

If you got rid of those three lenses, I would look into getting the Canon 16-35 f/2.8 or if you wanted to save some money Tokina makes a 16-28 f/2.8 for full frame systems.

Thats just what I would do... but yeah hope this helps in your decision making and happy shooting!

How does your Tokina not work on the 5d mk ii? Sure you can only use it at 16mm but it's still pretty good at 16mm.

I agree flipping it might be a good idea, but what would you try and get?

Yeah I'd flip the camera if I were you. You could probably sell the body for at least $900 then the 11-16 for around $500 and the 18-135 for maybe $300. I know there's an a7s for around that price on here but usd so if you could spend the extra money for the dollar exchange id personally get that

7D Mk2 all day. I have it, and i love it. It is so damn fresh.

Look for a used one, keep your lenses, enjoy the killer Dual Pixel AF in video.

Yeah af for video on a dslr isn't exactly a selling point.

ehh I would not recommend the 7Dii when theres so many better options at a similar price, it still shoots ~900p and upscales to soft 1080p. I agree with eheath about video AF, not a selling point and reason to choose it over a gh4/a7s IMO

I had 2 Canon lenses when I jumped ship and went to Sony and it was no problem at all, adapters are cheap if you don't need a speedbooster. OP isn't locked into Canon there are better options

because the low light capability of a ff camera is significantly better that a crop sensor. the price was right. the gh4 low light is awful, and the sony is amazing but too expensive for my needs

Thanks to everyone who has given suggestions and input.

i understand that there are significantly better systems out there, but I'm pretty happy with the 5dii and the secondary t4i. I have been shooting a lot of low light stuff recently, and i got an amazing price on the 5dii with the 24-105 f4L, it was too good to pass up, and it will really help with that low light work. Plus there is just something about that full frame sensor look that i really like.

The sony a7s looks amazing, but where i live there arent any used ones available, and with the usd to cad exchange rate im not looking to spend 3500 ish on a new camera body. I also dislike the idea of buying a used one over the internet where i cannot actually look and feel the thing before I pay for it. Thanks for the suggestions on the new camera ides, but im just looking for opinions on glass at this point

The 5dm2 low light is pretty terrible as well...
