The only time I've seen it successfully done is when the person was "too full" or the carbonation of the drinks got to them. Generally if you're throwing up from being too drunk, you're not rejoining the party. Nor should you, you're probably a mess.

I went through a phase where I couldn't drink more than a few beers without throwing up from being too bloated. I'd be fine one second then the next I'd be one sip over the line. But I could always hold it off for a few minutes which was enough time for me to sneak off somewhere, empty the tank, then carry on my night just swimmingly. Except for one time when I was playing drinking games with my friends, had a big dinner, didn't see it coming, projectiled burgers and beer all over the table and myself. then I went home, changed and carried on my night.
