The day? September 11th. The year? 1973.
Augusto Pinochet proceeds with a military coup to overthrow the ruling government of Chile.
A coup that showed the true two-faced nature of the United States Government and lack of compassion for civilian lives. On the outside the US condemned the actions of Pinochet, all the while in secret support. The result being the loss of thousands of civilian lives and tens of thousands of tortured individuals and nearly 2 decades of brutal dictatorial rule.
The reason? The US has a hate for democracy. Chile had been a true democracy for decades prior. In 1970, despite millions of dollars injected by the US to try to sway the outcome of the election, Chile elected (democratically) the socialist Salvador Allande and, as was custom at the time, the US had to be fundamentally opposed to any socialist regardless of intentions.
Trying to sway a democratic election wasn't enough, so the US decided to use military involvement to help with the overthrow and assassination of Allande only to put in place a brutal dictator who will keep power for the next 17 years.
Good job USA, ya fuckers.
