Not trying to be uppity with the New Yorker, but this was an awesome article. I'm from the PNW and most people call it Denali around here anyways. This opened up the debate again about our own Mt. Rainier going back to the original name of Tahoma.

Would love to see it be Tahoma again. Love the whole indigenous culture of the PNW and always love to see it brought out into modern day things. Growing up as a seahawks fan I was always scared shitless of their logo. Was blown away by the obvious:

Me too, love the color scheme too of "cascadia." I like that Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver all try to do something along green and blue (minus the Blazers).

Eh my belief is that first people to climb it or map it can name it. The seahawks wanted their name on the Lombardi trophy last year, but they were beaten by the patriots and don't get that honor. Similarly, the USA beat the natives and so we get nsming rights to anything we want.


At the end of the day it's just a name. Let's deal with the appallingly bad conditions on reservations before we deal with something far less pressing but far more pleasant and self serving for white people.

But renaming it to the original name shows that you as a government have respect for the native people of the land. It's such a simple thing to do with no consequences that has such a big impact on the culture of native americans.

Should we rename all of our lakes, mountains, rivers, valleys, etc to the name that Indians had?

What you're forgetting is that names like Denali which means great one all have stories and traditions associated with them. And it's about paying respect to the traditional owners of the land and their way of like. And has no affect on natives? That's why native people petition to have names changed aye?

Sounds like you've found a way to feel superior to everyone while still complaining. Why not relish in a positive step and still preach that we could and should be doing more? Being divisive is petty and lame.
