Best way to detune ski edges for rails?

i was just curious what other people do. I usually get a rock and just rub the edges on the middle two feet or so of each ski.
I usually make them pretty soft underfoot. How much is enough to make sure they arent sticking to rails?

Haha yes a rock will be a horrible way to do it.

Best at way is wit an edge file. You want to slowly round off the sharp edge with talking too much off the edge. You want to do long passes with the file and release pressure at the end. Once you are happy the edge is rounded you can take a gummy stone and clean up the edge. The file will leave slight marks and you use the gummy to help clean these up. A few passes with the stone should be good.

You ou probably want to detune the area under the bindings an maybe a little further if you like to nose and tail press and you also want to detune the contact point of the ski ( the area the bases meet). This helps make the ski less catchy and just helps them ride better.

I'm pretty sure if you hit rails before/without detuning your edges it'll be easier to fuck them up

Being a racer and seeing that you purposely use a rock on your edges makes me want to cry a little bit tbh...
Anyway gummy stones work real good and even just rounding your edge out with a regular finishing stone works great too.

File or gummy stone depending on how gnar you're going.

Don't use a rock. The biggest thing is getting everything even and clean whether you're going mellow or full on rounded.

I would recommend taping off the area you plan to detune on both skis so you are consistent. Also try and do it evenly. If you do all your edges differently, you can have some turning issues until they where in.


Don't detune it a shit ton just because you heard you have to. Go somewhat mellow if you haven't before. Honestly I had one of my boards straight rounded. But that's what I wanted, something that wouldn't hook into rails no matter what. That said I couldn't turn on ice at all, that was my trade off.

Basically, any place on the spectrum is fine but just don't over do it unless you know you're going to be down with that. Easy to take your edges down more, not as easy to bring them back if you fuck them up.

Might not be a bad idea to do it while hitting a summer set up or opening weekend. Have a file and gummy stone with you IF you feel like it needs to be taken down more you can, but if you find a spot you like, you can stay. Instead of realizing you went way t far.

I guess I've been doing it wrong all along. There's something awesome about using a rock as a tool though. Just the other day we needed a flathead screwdriver for this screw and my buddy found this tiny flat rock instead. Felt like cavemen discovering fire for the first time.

i go for a bit at 45 then go with a few different angles after that so it eventually rounds out, just play with it until you notice the edge is a little rounded
