Hey NS. So I am getting more into filming and editing, and I was wondering what my next step should be. I use iMovie, and am very familiar with the editing on it. I want a camera that takes great pictures, but I also want a camera that will allow me to take great video as well. I have a GoPro Hero 3 Black right now, and I'm shooting at 2K 30 fps which is great, but if I want to slow something down more when skiing, the 30 fps can get kind of choppy. By using a camera, will this allow me to take better footage, and have a higher frame rate? I guess another question I have is what would be the pros (just focusing on the video part) of upgrading my GoPro to a Canon or Nikon?

I really appreciate your help, and your suggestions for cameras. My mom has a very nice Canon, and I am very familiar with how to use it for photos...just less familiar with videos on these cameras. My budget max would be probably $600.00 but tell me what would be my best option if it is close to that price please.

Camera that shoot 1080p 60fps are usually more expensive than that. And are actually kinda advanced. especially those that shoot any higher than 1080p

Your goPro can shoot at 60fps, just not at 2k. It can also shoot 1080p 60fps and 720p 120fps.

Now, for a normal camera for pictures, I recommend the T2i or T3i. They both shoot 1080p 30fps and are a great beginners camera to dslrs.

Thanks man! Honestly I really do like the GoPro, and maybe I will sell my Hero 3 and upgrade to a Hero 4. Because for video the Hero 4 is a major upgrade as it can shoot 1080p at 120 fps, and then 2K at 50 fps. Is this wise do you think?

If you want a camera that has both solid photo and video, then get a dslr(something like a t3i). It will take time to learn how to use it but it is definitely worth it if you plan on advancing in photo/video.
But if you just want better video and dont care about photo as much then a gopro would be a good choice. You also will not have to learn how to use a new camera.

T3i is a great starter for video and photo.
If you want to do video with it and skiing. Look into a Glidecam.

The higher the FPS the better for slow mo.
720x120 on your gopro should be more than enough. 1080x60 should be well too.

I shoot 1080x24 on my t3i when I'm out on the field for work.

600$ is a little bit low of a budget, but it can be worked around on something like a t2i/t3i..

alternatively, another option would be something like a Nikon D5100, or a Panasonic GH2. both can be had for about the same price, and each have their own benefits as well.

either way, budget about 300ish for an HDSLR. You can get a cheap-ish microphone for 50 or so, and a basic tripod, and then a few old prime lenses from pentax or olympus or something (a 28, a 50, and a 135mm, or perhaps a 70-210 f4 zoom) could give you plenty of options for shot selection. (shouldn't cost more than say, 100$ for those lenses if you shop well and maybe buy vintage 3rd party IE: vivitar). Use your go-pro when you need wider angles than those, and you'll be just fine.

To slow something down 2x, you need to be shooting twice as fast as your final project is...

So if your project is a 30fps project, you need to shoot at 60fps to slow it down 2x. shooting at 24p? shoot at least at 50p or so..

30fps slowed down to 24fps doesn't give you a lot of latitude for slowing things down, really... it's only a 6 frame difference instead of a 24 or 30 frame per second difference.


If you shoot on any canon other than the 7Dmk2, then you'll have to stick to 720p... Same goes for Nikon, unless you're on a D750, D7200, D5300, or D3300 (in other words, their brand newest lineup)

The GH3 can do 1080p60 no problem as well.. and at a really high bit-rate - which is rad. Honestly, those are killer as fuck for video.

Either way, to get really legit slow-mo from something with that large of a sensor and such, you're going to be more in the realm of the FS100 and really pricy stuff for 120fps, or true slow motion...

I mean he replied for me lol. I wouldn't slow down at 30FPS. Only shoot 24FPS because Prof. wants us to because he says so. So I listen to him lol.
