They dressed like thugs, acted like thugs and skied like thugs. The image of thug skiers evolved with society’s image of thugs. The thug attribute comes from skiing dangerously, like hitting urban in the streets, going out of bounds to ski gnarly pow lines, drinking, doing drugs, and just doing shit for fun that is more than likely illegal… which is basically what a thug is.

TallxTThere is something intrinsically racist about contrasting whiteness with thug. I don't agree with that way of wording your question. Music is the number one influencer across all subcultures. This small niche of skiing has traditionally enjoyed hip hop so we choose to emulate that style.

fast_ass_cam_You need to watch Like a Lion and see where the roots of newschool freeski came from. Second if you care about what other people are wearing you have way to much time and money on your hands. Third why do you care so much about what other people do to make themselves feel good and be comfortable, solely the reason why people dress the way they do. Reading all your comments make it seem as if your mad ignorant, and I know Canadians aren't dumb. I know dudes, Canadian dudes, that will never have to work a day in their life wearing DC shoes and baggy jeans, does that make them a "Wigger" no that means there dressing how they want to dress.

VinnieFAs in the sport that is most predominantly done by those who are Caucasian. But I guess for skiing it's more referring to the fact that the vast majority of people who ski are from the white middle to upper class demographic. A demographic which is essentially as far away from being a minority from the ghetto as you can get, which was the clothing style emulated by so many skiers.
Would you not find it strange if prep clothing was a fashion trend for basketball games in low income neighbourhoods?

BurgyYeah but most of the people that ski don't act like thugs. It’s the minority of people who are in the streets "Vandalizing" an urban rail to get a sick shot that are thugs. Before Hills set up terrain parks, these skiers had to ski in the street and often had cops on their ass because what they were doing made them criminals. Ski bum culture, which goes way back, is another influence to Thug skiing. Living anywhere on a low income to ski as much as you can, drugs/booze, beards and long hair, and ripping off big capitalist ski resorts by sneaking up chairlifts and stealing food. A thug is a dangerous person, who is associated with illegal activity, it has nothing to do with colour, or income.
As for Basketball, they have no excuse not to wear preppy matching uniforms. There's nothing that makes Basketball thug, sure it has street appeal, but it’s not dangerous, it’s not extreme, and you are never doing anything illegal. Basketball is a pretty clean sport where you should dress preppy because you are acting preppy regardless of the income of the neighbourhood.
Where in urban skiing, almost the entirety of the sport is illegal and dangerous.

BurgyI know what ur saying, but it does matter because skiing is not simply skiing. skiing is an art and you have to understand how to express its language and attitude to know how to innovate it and have fun. if it didn't matter why would grinding a rail matter? or doing a back flip? why go down the hill at all? yes, we should all stop worrying and just go have fun skiing,. but if we stop trying to understand skiing culture and what sets certain styles apart, we lose are ability to be creative and progress.

S.J.WSo with using my own ancedotol expierance with skiiers stealing culture I can't but imageine how the african american community feels with cultural appropration. My own expierance is a shirt and words. Where as the African American community was stronlgy and still is oppressed by white people, while the same white people will take all the popular parts of African American culture and the same time tell a black person that their struggle doesn't matter.
