onenerdykidI know you are addressing this to campeador, but I'd like to weigh in. I like to think of myself as a free speech absolutist- there should be no laws against what we are allowed to say or write or express. That is not to say I morally condone all such things, but only that people should be allowed to say them and I think it should be their right. We need an unfettered freedom of speech to allow educational dialectic to flourish, no matter how disgusting or reprehensible or immoral we find someone else's speech to be. The only way we can defeat the bad/false ideas and arrive at the truth is if they are brought to light and discussed in plain view. I find Germany and Austria's banning of the swastika or denying the Holocaust in public to be examples of bad laws and I think they are mistaken to do this. If we really want to show how bad the Nazi swastika is or how horrible the Holocaust was, let a neo-Nazi wave a flag bearing the swastika or let someone try to deny that the Holocaust happened. They will be met with far more truth and persuasive argument in public than they will behind closed doors.
Moreover, I find it morally irresponsible to blame a book for a person's actions. People (arguably) possess free will and their actions are the result of their own personal choices. To shift the moral blame of the agent to the author/publishing company of the book is utterly ridiculous and it demonstrates that we clearly do not understand personal responsibility. I find it akin to suing a ski resort because I broke my neck skiing in the park due to my own choices/mistakes. A book is no more responsible for me killing someone than a ski resort is for my neck being broken.
This of course stops when words cease being merely words and become actions. Once people start acting on their beliefs, we should hold them fully accountable for what they do.
