This thread has changed my perception of things a little, I went for a drink with a friend last night who recently converted to Islam (in order to get married). Due to all the 'facts' we have seen here, I kept on thinking that he was going to impose sharia law, or sexually assault me, but thankfully in the end we just had a beer and a nice time.

There is a difference between Islam and a Muslim. One is the ideology, one is a person whose adherence to the ideology varies from person to person. Muslims who drink alcohol, allow women to freely express themselves, encourage same sex relationships, allow fellow Muslims to leave the faith, not want others to follow in their footsteps, etc. are Muslims in the loosest sense of any definition. While such characteristics are admirable in our society, they are certainly not Islamic. In fact, the best kind of Muslims are ones who do not live according to Islamic principles.
The same can equally be said for Christianity and Christians. Christians who literally follow all of the teachings in the Bible will be horrible people bent on forcing their world-view on others, whereas Christians who ignore the disgusting parts of the Bible and cherry-pick the good parts out, will be good people.
Moderately religious people are good not because they listen solely to their faith, but instead to their own practical reason and common sense. Only by ignoring vast amounts of religious dogma will people be able to live together in a society. This applies to Muslims and Christians alike.

You do know that people have to do the same to marry a Catholic or a Jew, right? My brother had to "take classes of Catholic faith" because his catholic fiancée wanted to get married in a church and the priest wouldn't allow it if he didn't take them (and he was pretty modern compared to others). I also know a girl who had to fully convert to judaism because she wanted to marry a jew. This is not proper to Islam.

The other point I forgot to mention is that when this Pew Poll was conducted, many conservative Muslim countries did not allow it to be done- Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, etc.
Had those countries been included, there would be more countries showing less pleasant numbers/percentages.

Since the topic is muslims... there was a poll of muslims across the world (could have been the one cited earlier, idk), but it showed a scary trend. Throughout the world--including the US--a frightening number of Muslims stated that bombings or mass killings are sometimes justified. I have a liberal friend who tried to make excuses of why it showed up like that, but even he didn't deny the numbers.
