Annoying Ski Racer Kids?

Who else gets those little ski racer kids who go down the mountain as fast as they can, showing off to you as they go past, because you're looking at how dumb they look? They also have those really stuck up moms that the kid just treats like shit like "Buy me this buy me that". It f*cks me off so much

Those annoying racer kids will be the pros of next. You're pissed because they have more money, talent and support than you. Not their fault. Hate on them because they are ass holes or rude, but giving them shit because they enjoy a different discipline of sliding on snow is lame.

That sounds like a lot of park skiers. I wonder if there is some racing version of NS and some kid on it is like "I hate those stupid little park skiers who go down the mountain trying to do butters and tricks and trying to look thug? They also have those moms who buy them every piece of saga clothing they ask for."

They are assholes, they show off infront of people instead of just doing their thing. I don't care if they race but some of them go round the mountain trying to make out that they're better than everyone

I grew up racing, and the funny thing is that they really teach the mentality of "You are the best skiers on the mountain." I mean maybe its not as bad these days, and maybe that was just the coaches I had.... but that was a big part about what made skiing suck in the '90s. Everything was about winning and being the best.

I'll take a crew of too-cool park rats who are at least hanging out with their buddies sessioning any day of the week over the absolute must-win mentality of racing.

Of course then you could argue that we're getting dangerously close to that with the competition scene.... but that is another debate.

Exactly. It's not the kids fault in the first place its whoever is coaching them. I can imagine it getting to the point where they're being pushed so much that it takes the fun out of skiing. If skiing stopped being fun I wouldn't do it anymore, even though it never will.

That mentality sure has changed now that freeskiing isn't the oppressed minority anymore.

Yeah dude, I was super close to quitting in the late '90s. Just hated it.

Tried snowboarding and sucked too bad to enjoy it. Liked skiing, hated what it was about.

Then BAM - saw my first freeze magazine and the 'No skiers in the park' signs came down. The rest is history.

Yeah I remember when I was training to become a ski instructor the person who I was training kept bragging about his 13 year old son. One thing he said in particular really just annoyed me, " So my son's a racer, and that means that he is just fundamentally and all around better skier than you. He has better edge control, can turn better, and is a much more developed rider. Besides he doesn't look ridiculous."
A couple things with this. I'm tired with the presumption with that park skiers can only go straight and then do tricks, we can ski too. That also isn't exactly the best way to encourage people to join ski instructing or ski racing, and to describe my outfit, it was a jiberish la tache that fits me like it should, a pair of slim black snow pants, a black beanie, a black balaclava, all black oakleys, the blue and black full tilt hot doggers, and jskis twisters. I was not dressed crazy at all, pretty modestly in my opinion. I don't have a problem with racers really, just when their parents act out against people who enjoy snow differently.

I would have fucking flipped my shit if I'd heard this. You hit the nail on the head that its basically the worst thing ever in the ski industry that park skiers are written off as some kind of fucking second class citizen who has no place in the upper class rich of skiing. Its utter horseshit.

I don't even care if its true. If you're some absolute n00b park skier from minnesota that only knows how to go straight and slide rails... at least you love skiing. I'd bet both my legs that one day you'll start playing with those edges, learning how to turn and maybe slipping into a glade or two. Even if not, who fucking cares?

Park skiing is the most accessable way for people to get started. Its cool, its fun and its actually a way to grow skiing overall. How you going to convince kids to ski when the only path is to be the best skier on the mountain through 14 years of rigorous lessons before you're even considered human? THat is fucking rediculous, and its exactly what caused half of skiers to bail and start snowboarding.

We actually have a god damn chance right now to re-establish ourselves as a fantastic activity to do in the winter. Whatever you're into - and that includes racing - should be perfectly fine. As long as the only unacceptable thing is to be a dickbag that thinks your'e better than everyone else we can be a rad sport again.

Ussa races are just the worst, they take up a whole god damn chalet for a race. and the racers will just sit in their unless they have to go slip the course or its time for them to go do their race. its ridiculous.

A little 13 year old ski racer at this camp I went to kept banging on the walls and making sex noises at 2 am as everyone was trying to sleep. I told him to stop 20 times and all the counselors were not anywhere close so I told him if he kept doing it im gonna grab him out of bed and put him on the table where all the staff were chilling on their off time..... lets just say my counselor didn't appreciate a 13 year old pasty super skinny kid in tidy whities screaming on the table and swearing as he was incredibly embarrassed cus 20 people were looking at him in his underwear. Later that week he said he could doubles better then me on tramp and he un tucked to his face so hard every time..XD... Good times! I made it up to him by buying him a soda! lol
Some racers are cool! Not many though.

So if you are a dick ski racer at mountain creek nj pick on some one your own size dick head. This may not apply to all ski racers... Please do not get offended.

Grew up racing and raced through high school. When it comes down to it...the vast majority of people are just jealous they don't have the money, resources, skills that the racers possess. Racers are by FAR the best skiers on the mountain. So many kids on the race team could throw down in the park as well. When it comes down to it, there isn't any better way to develop true ski talent than through a mogul or race program. Watch any racer / ex racer ski. Its uncomparable to any normal skier. The form/technique/skill is just on another level.

It varies from person to person. You may get a racer who is a real down to earth guy, and you may get a racer who sucks to be around. Same with park skiers. Or big mountain skiers. Or even gapers

See how it works literally the exact same for park rat kids, OP? And don't try to tell me you've never seen park skiers who act this way. Young people are often times annoying, regardless of what they're doing. Just comes with being young and not sure of who you are yet and feeling the need for attention because of this.

I was a "racer kid" tell I was 8, yes its true that most are spoiled but racing makes a great skier and yeah they are the future pros. Now I compete in big mountain and pay every dime of my skiing expense other than the pair of snow pants my mom provides each season. I also work at Brighton, there is not a soul on the slope I don't get along with and I love teaching what us on new schoolers classify as "gapers" and this whole mentality that "racer kids" or "gapers" or "newbies" dont deserve to ski on the mountain is bs lighten up just let the kids have fun, they mean no harm. Also if you really wanna give a "racer kid" are hard time just teaz them saying mogul skiers are better skiers, its true. To address them showing off, I dont know a single person who takes skiing even a little bit seriously that doesn't show off

Wait THAT WAS REAL? Someone told me they didn't let skiers in the "snowboard park" back in the day and I thought they were totally full of BS! Wow we came a long way!

tell me what it was like bishop, did ski patrol kick you out if you went in? But ski patrol had to ski, so THEY broke the rules... Was there snowboard patrol for the park and ski patrol everywhere else? Or was it just snowboard gangs with mob enforced rules, tell us the days of your youth

Oh shit yeah it was real. I remember once we had a ski patroller come to speak with our race team about how jumping wasn't allowed at the mountain. You couldn't even hit side booters without having your pass pulled. Hell if you popped a mogul and did a spread eagle - bam pass pulled.

Their logic was that you were out of control in the air.

I put my hand up and said "Wait - why are the snowboarders allowed to jump in the park then?" - to which the response was (and I'm not even fucking with you) "Well son, skiers can't control themselves in the air. Next question."

So the patroller if they were on skis would nab you at the bottom when you came out - but the mob justice of snowboarders was fucking insane. Even after the no skiers in the park signs came down, and I decided to start riding in there every day it was brutal. Literally every single day all day for probably a good two seasons of my life, I'd show up at the park with my tunes on minding my own business... and probably at least every other run down the hill it was:

"FUCKING SKIER F*G" "FUCKING F*GGOT SKIER" "FUCK YOU SKIER" "GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE SNOWBOARD PARK FUCKING F*GGOT SKIER". Every 3-4 runs someone would try to hit me with a snowball.

That was what made early day twin tippers so tight. When another dude would show up you were instantly homies for life. Finally at least you were getting yelled at together.

After a few years they accepted me, I managed to get on park staff and over the years won their respect. Ended up friends with most of those guys.

But yeah dude, that shit was 100% real.

This mindset runs rampant up here in Maine, when I was in middle school and before the parents of some of my friends, they wouldnt let their kids ski with me because I didnt have the fundamentals in their mind. I didnt come from a racing background like their kids. I was dangerous to ski close to in the words of a couple of them.

There is definitely this idea pushed by a lot of racing parents and coaches that being a racer and having that background will make you a better skier than everyone else, yes it is great with teaching fundamentals, but it is not an end all be all.

Second, this mindset, yes is mostly the fault of a lot of these parents/coaches, however, lets say a kid is racist, because his parents are racist and thats what they taught him. Doesnt mean either of them arent acting like dicks sometimes.

This luckily is getting more and more rare, as freeskiing becomes a more recognized discipline.

Living in Massachusetts I know a lot of people that are racers that ski up at loon and shit. One time I hitched a ride up there with one(cuz Loon is the shit, minus the lines and ice) and the whole way up he wouldn't stop mouthing off about how he was a better skier than him and all that shit. It was annoying but he was rich and bought me tickets so it kind of canceled it out. I know a lot of chill ski racers that aren't stuck up and aren't annoying. Also just keep in mind a lot of good park skier(Phil Casabon for example) were racers for a big chunk of their childhood and it is a big reason of why they are pro now.
