So much hate. I love how there are people doing skilled labor making less than that.

Also I bet a bunch of the people campaigning because they can't live on minimum wage have iphones and data plans, and waste money on useless stuff. I can agree our economy is in the shitter, but come on.

If you don't think 8.75 is enough money, find another job or work your way up. People quit fast food jobs all the time. If you aren't useless and hang around for a while you'll move up. I'm not saying you're going straight to the top, but you can definitely work your way up. You might not get rich but you can make a little more $$$.

And there's research from monetarists like Friedman, Schwartz etc who would argue otherwise. This is why no one can take you seriously. You've found research that supports your bias, unequivocally claim it was "thoroughly debunked" while ignoring all contrary research. In reality, economists are split 50-50 on this issue (a link was previously posted) so stating the findings of one side of argument is pointless as there is abundant research to contrary to your point.

.MASSHOLE.Do all college-age kids go to college? No. Do all teenagers finish HS? No. There are certainly people who can and will fill those positions. Besides, with automation coming to fast food it is only a matter of time before manpower needs decline.


And where do these college age/ HS drop-outs live? It would be foolish to assume that they are all living rent free with mommy and daddy.

But I agree with the automation point, soon all these people will be out of a job. Interesting to see what that will do to the unemployment rate. Sure it wouldn't affect the younger generation as much, but the middle age people that are stuck working these jobs will find themselves in a very precarious situation.

What research? The minimum wage has been diminishing since 1968 it's 50/50 with economists because we have never ever doubled minimum wage ever in the history of ever so since no experiment has been conducted there is no conclusion to be drawn.

The amount of speculating you guys do is astounding.

The wage itself has not been diminishing, the purchasing power has. If you are going to debate a point, make sure you use the proper terminology so you can attempt to have a semblance of knowledge about the topic.

The myth is that unemployment will rise.
Experts are undecided on whether that is true or not. Most seem to lean towards the idea that there won't be any substantial effect.

Granite_StateYeah? What teenager can work midday on week days? Or college kids with classes? Thats unreasonable for you to expect those two groups of people to cover the entire shift (sometimes 24 hours), especially in a city.


This is not related at all...but if you are suggesting that the demand for minimum wage jobs is low then I would argue against you.

I'm not at all...I'm saying that those two groups of people can't effectively run an entire 24/hour shift at McDonalds due to school, living circumstances, transportation, etc. How is that so hard to understand? In this day and age saying that McDonalds type jobs are only for those two types of people is ridiculous.

He didn't say that. He said the exact percentage of McDonalds jobs that are held by that group of people, and it was not 100%. No one ever said what you are suggesting.

Please elaborate because talking about grammar/word choice and claiming I don't know anything doesn't actually have anything to do with raising the topic at hand. I can obviously see that the minimum wage dollar amount has never decreased because the link I POSTED clearly shows that, which would imply that I am referring to purchasing power.

Adjusted for inflation, the federal minimum wage peaked in 1968 at $8.54 (in 2014 dollars). Since it was last raised in 2009, to the current $7.25 per hour, the federal minimum has lost about 8.1% of its purchasing power to inflation. The Economist recently estimated that, given how rich the U.S. is and the pattern among other advanced economies in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, "one would expect America...to pay a minimum wage around $12 an hour.



Ill assume you understand ^^^ being that you are so keen on telling people what they do not know.

If you're working the lowest level, of the most entry level job, you have nothing tying you down job wise. Just leave the city if you can't afford it. I mean, are people worried they won't be able to find as great of a job opportunity somewhere else?

Not everyone filling your place is 40 trying to support two kids. There are actually kids entering the work force looking for entry level jobs.

The fact is that if a 20 something college kid is trying to make their way in the world on a minimum wage job they are going to find themselves lost in a mound of uncontrollable debt because it is simply not possible. They only way for a poor kid to get an education is to take on a huge amount of debt. There is no working your way through school on a minimum wage job in today's economy. At $10/hr it's possible

yeah i agree,15/hr is a gross overcompensation in most areas of the country. Generally, it is low compared to past times and it has not been adjusted well for inflation. but right now to increase it to 15/hr would be devastating for small businesses, and larger companies would just start laying people off to compensate. It is productivity not spending that drives the economy and having that high of a minimum wage would lower overall productivity.

Lol, scholarships and a good job have paid off my out-of-state tuition 5 years after school.

Art history majors going to private liberal arts schools love to feel bad for themselves.

Yes sir, a large rather expensive out of state, state school, but a state school nonetheless. I turned down private schools for undergrad(their scholarship programs are even better though so cost is moot), and If I ever want to get a masters in my field or an MBA I would get my employer to pay for it(its been offered).

Well the problem with that isn't the minimum wage. The problem is outrageous tuition. Kids can borrow money easily, colleges can charge what they want. It's about the college experience now, not an education anyway for half the people.

The minimum wage shouldn't be raised just to make college easier. And if you're going to college you should be trying to get something above the most entry level job, at least after school.

Idk. People just seem to live in utopiaville these days. Everyone will have a job, everyone will make good money everyone will be happy, everyone will smile, and ski patrol will stop blowing things up.

Cool, now a gallon on milk will be like $10. Raising minimum wage is a temporary solution that stays in proportion to the wages supporting the economy. Burger flippers don't deserve that much, how about those that receive some type of training to make their time more valuable. So many dumbasses.

A lot of economists said that we were doing fine up until there was no denying the last recession. And they still have jobs as professors, news shows, as well as being quoted for this and that.

I really have 0 problems with disagreeing with "a lot of economists".

Fortunately when everyone was saying "We're totally fine, the economy is great, anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant", I was stocking up on silver and made money off our economy shitting out.
