B1tchI've been a line cook and I've been a ski tech. Being a Ski tech is one of the laziest/mindless jobs a stoner can get. its REALLY easy. Way way easier than cooking.

There are people with amazing work ethic that will never hold even a managerial position. There are millions of Americans that bust ass for shit money and still live below the poverty line. Earlier in my life I worked at Staples and made $7.80. That is absolutely not a livable wage, not when you have to pay monthly rent, utilities, food, and other expenses.

This argument is bullshit. Half of you are just blaming people who work minimum wage jobs for being lazy or "not intelligent" with literally no backing. The other half is saying those same people should be paid a little more. Obviously there are fractures in both arguments but thats the general sense of where this discussion has gone and where it's going. And I feel a lot of the former have grown up with certain entitlements the latter have not.

I get it, the world is full of shit jobs and someones gotta do them but when the shit jobs can barely put food on the table and give people in a developed country a lifestyle that you would normally see in a developing country, thats where I have a problem. I don't think the majority of people advocating for a pay raise want or care to see $15/hour, but an increase is more than reasonable to ask for. Also, $15/hour now =/= $15/hour 10, 15, 20, etc. years ago....

Dustin.How much cheaper can lettuce and chicken actually get? Healthy food is not expensive, vegetables are extremely cost effective unless you go to Whole Foods and willingly pay 10x more to be pretentious. This argument always baffles me.

Have you guys actually gone to a fast food place recently by the way? It is NOT cheap. A meal is only a dollar or two shy of some great sit down options. Unless you are a dedicated dollar menu person, you are flushing serious cash making it a habit of grabbing boring food.

Isn't it common fucking sense that being a ski tech, washing cars, and flipping burgers is unskilled labor? Literally anyone can do/learn this stuff in a matter of hours, and then never be required to get better at it or maintain any sort of proficiency. If I was a Dairy Queen owner, put on a blindfold, and walked outside pointing at random people...I'm pretty sure the first 8 people I pointed at would do fine. And if not, it would take me a few minutes to find someone who could do it better. So I think minimum wage is perfectly fine, that's exactly what I would/did expect to receive for such easy work. I have worked infinitely harder than my high school jobs just to get a degree and do what I do now, and I actually have to worry about losing the skills and knowledge I'm required to maintain.

So frankly, if you think that you "deserve" more I will call upon my experience doing those jobs to tell you that you're either entitled, stupid, simply ignorant, lazy, or a douchebag. Maybe all of them. There are many awesome people out there doing these jobs either because they choose to or because they don't know how to/are afraid to put themselves out there and try to move up. Burger King is not a career, and it won't pay as such...except when the government does something as stupid as raising minimum wage for a single career rather than all of them.

Waiter, waitress, manual labor, etc. Minimum wage should not be raised to offset the poor choices made by many people, it should be raised to match inflationary tendencies. By raising it to $15 it is not matching tendencies but overshooting them.

I am all for a higher minimum wage, but not this drastically.

B1tchNot really. I think it's fine to only hire someone for 12-24 hours a week. It allows for more flexibility. I don't support paying someone below a living wage regardless of how much time they give you.

I think $15/hr is too high. $10 is perfect. You still have to work hard and you might have a shady living situation but 40/hrs a week allows for the disciplined to save money to grow and the rest to live comfortably like barely paying the Netflix bill comfortable.
