onenerdykidI will be the first to agree with you concerning the topic of wasteful spending. For example, we can do a lot when we stop blowing our load on military defense to the extent that we do. This is not to say that we stop it altogether, but we certainly do not need to spend more than the next 9 top spenders combined. If that insanely high amount of money (roughly $600 billion per year) doesn't seem the least bit excessive to anyone, then you need to re-examine your thought process entirely. There is absolutely no reason why we must spend 4 times the amount of China (the #2 spender) or 8 times that of Saudi Arabia (the #3 spender). A lot can be done with the money if our budget were cut by 20%. We would still be the leading defense spender (by almost triple) yet with $120 billion to put to use for "making America great again".
Now, I have no idea how much we spend on our domestic military infrastructure vs. our foreign military infrastructure, and I personally believe we are very wasteful with it in certain areas.
That being said, I have always wondered what would happen to European military spending if we were to cut back our bases and man-power abroad. I would have to imagine that the European countries would pick up the slack in some shape or form. I don't think NATO would, so that leaves me to believe it would be individual countries slowly increasing their military power to adequate levels. It seems to me that very few, if any, European countries are prepared for any sort of military conflict that involves nations and conventional warfare.
Would a slow scale down of US military forces drastically alter the ability for countries to spend their own budget on healthcare, affordable college, and other programs that they seem to spend it on as they redirect it towards military growth?
If anyone can find anything, or if any Europeans can perhaps give some insight I would appreciate it. It is a thought I have had recently and frankly am curious about.
