New setup for Touring and Resort POW days?

tomPietrowskiIf I was going for a frame binding it would be the guardian. But that's not to say things like the adrenalin are no good they are still a quality product. I just trust the feel and hold of the guardian more. They really do ski like a alpine binding which is a big plus if these are also your everyday ski.

also, you think the guardian is a better choice even tho it weighs about 500 grams more than the adrenaline?

If you don't need a din of 14 or above you should be fine on the 13.

I have seen way too many pairs of Guardians snap in two to ever consider buying them. If the heaviest option is also the most likely to break then something is wrong.

thats a good point, if i stay away from the f12s and go for a heavy binding, i want it to be because im more confident with it not breaking on me. But is that still a problem with the guardians or did they fix it?

Also I was looking at the king pin now too, and my god does that binding look beautiful! How would I know what type of boots would work for that type of binding? I kindve want to stay away from a tech boot, since I would still be doing a lot of resort skiing on it.

For you kingpins would probably be a waste. You would need new tech compatible boots whereas you could go for a gaurdian an you it with your current setup.

What at I would do is when you come to buy new boots get somthing which has tech compatability but also is din compatable. Some boots do both on the same sole some you need to swap the soles.

But it but tech compatible. The kingpin is just the first new binding and the ones to come souns even better.

As as for the gaurdian yes te very first generation did have issues. We warrantied quite a few that first year but since the. I have seen no issues and I would happily ski on them.

BoaxTrekkers work fine with any alpine binding, including turntables. Anyone who says differently hasn't set theirs up right or is just spreading second hand reports from others who haven't set them up right.

Buy whatever you like and go skiing.

Ahhh, the old "you didn't set them up right" argument. As if all the people who have found them wanting never bothered to tweak the set up to try and make it right.

Trekkers are ok for plodding up easy skin tracks but as soon as you hit any sort of more technical skinning (steep switchbacks, steep sidehilling etc) they just don't work as well as proper touring bindings. Given that a lot of people who start doing a little bit of touring fall in love with it and start touring more, you may as well just start with a set up that is better suited to it, even if you sacrifice some downhill performance. Just my two cents but I've never known anyone who has found trekkers satisfactory for significant amounts of touring. There's a reason almost everyone who tours eventually moves towards frame bindings and then tech bindings.

Ive read on a couple places (here included) that snow can build up under the metal frame when touring and cause the metal bars to bend and snap. Also, do you happen to know if salomon warranties the guardian for these types of problems and for how long?

Good choice on the gaurdian. They are just what your after solid dh feel and a good walk mode. They are what a lot of my friends use.

In terms of durability they have gone through a couple of generations. The toe and the hinge have been improved so make sure you don't buy an older one. i have seen no issues with the new ones over last season but problems will be warrantied for the length of the warrenty period which I can't remember how long that is for salomon bindings but it will be on their website.

Okay so now I am trying to choose my other essential touring gear and just want an opinion on if my gear is okay!

I was going to get:

All Black Diamond

Skins: Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Beacon: PIEPS DPS Sport Beacon

Shovel: Transfer 3 Shovel

Probe: QuickDraw Tour 280 cm Probe

Pack: Covert AvaLung Pack


My friend recommended I get the Transfer or Deploy 7 Shovel with a 240cm Probe but I can buy the beacon, shovel and probe as a pack like that off of black diamonds website so I was going to just go with that and save some money, but let me know if you think its worth me going for what my friend recommends.

For the pack, I have no idea if this is a good choice, my friend recommended the Osprey Kode or Gregory Ski Pack but the AvaLung had fairly good reviews, again, if you think I should definitely take my friends advice on this, I will. Let me know asap, because I want to order this gear asap!!

Slow down turbo. While snow is coming it still wont be skiable for a few weeks. You got time.

To start I would highly recommend staying away from whatever PIEPS makes. I've never owned one but every time I've held one they just feel cheap. I would stick with BCA, Mammut, Ortovox. Right now I own Ortovox 3+ and feel it's super solid.
For pack get one for what your gonna use it for. Are you going to carry skis on it? How big of a pack you need? Multi days? Day trips?

When it comes to Avalanche safety gear you really shouldn't look at it as "where can I save money" but "which gear is good and will work when shit hits the fan". Because lets remember that's why your looking to buy gear. For when shit goes wrong and you have 5-7mins to dig out your buddy. before they die.

Also do not forget the biggest avalanche safety tool. Knowledge. All the gear in the world won't save you with out knowledge and training. I highly recommend you setting money aside for Avalanche classes. Go buy some avalanche training books and make them your bible. Train, train, train, and then make you BC partner train with you. Haha to be perfectly honest, the reason im in such a hurry is because im not sure how much longer ill have access to my pro deal because of work.

My friend had recommended the PIEPS sport and it looked like it had good reviews? anyone else care to chyme in on this?

As for back packs, I would probably do only day trips. Theres a slight possibilty I could do a multi trip but thats just me wishful thinking. I dont plan on carrying skis on? I mean isnt that the purpose of getting a touring setup? Or will there still be times, even with a touring setup, that I will have to hike in my boots?

Oh and I plan on taking avy training and probably reading a book on it

so another friend of mine recommended PIEPS. Stating that I cant go wrong with either BD or BCA, but hes had his PIEPS for 14 years and has had no problem. But he recommended I get the upgraded set with the PIEPS Pro (extra features and longer range), Evac 7 Shovel (Bigger?) and 320 mm Probe.

FYI I work at a shop and I am not arguing with previous statements just providing things and information to consider when selecting a boot binding pairing at the end of the day it's based on your budget and preference.

If you have a pro deal option and you are comfortable with the option go for it. No need get a 16 Din if you never turn above 11. A 13 over even 12din will get the job done (the 12 might feel a tad sketchy if you are always at 11 but will still get the job done). Don't make weight a ruling factor but also don't forget it plays apart in how many laps you can get in the backcountry.

All of the bindings spoken of have different pros and cons.

Marker Plate bindings (F12s, Baron, Duke etc.)
- Best power transfer/ as they use the epf plate and the toe piece to transfer force through the whole binding (Where some mostly on just the toe piece for this job) and they have the largest connection point between the ski and the heal piece.
- shortest mount length = allows ski to flex more naturally
- shortest stand height

Solamon/Atomic (guardian etc)
- Mostly metal = beefy and durable
- change modes with out taking boot off

Tyrolla/ Head (adrenalin)
- doesn't really offer anything different that the other two don't already touch on.

Pin Bindings are the best for touring especially with all the new tech and boots coming down the pipe.
Things to keep in mind though
- There is only one Boot at will PROPERLY fit with Alpine bindings and tech bindings Technical Cochise since they have interchangeable Pin and alpine soles.
- You can almost always jam a rockered pin boot into any WTR binding and it can work fine (not great but fine).
- The issue is with the soft rubber soles their can be problems with pre-release or no release as they don't have a hard plastic plate on the sole to slide and transfer power properly with the plate of the binding.

Woah, no no no. You have the Salomon Quest Series, the K2 Pinnacle series, Atomic Waymaker Series, and Scarpa Freedom series.

There are a LOT more options than just the Cochise. More boot makers are coming out with them every year. You are also seeing the increase in bindings that can fit traditional AT boots like your Dynafits, Scarpas, etc. These include the Marker Lord and Salomon/Atomic Warden.

And the Marker options actually have the highest stack height while the Atomic/Salomon options have the lowest...

No offense man, but if you work in a shop you need to know these things.

now i need some recommendations for mounting. I primarily want the ski to just float in the powder but I would also like them to be playful and feel good when throwing a couple 3's here and there.

I was thinking of getting them mounted +2 from standard (or -2 from center).
