WiFi Router

Need to get a new one, it'll be for a modest two bedroom apartment. My last one I had for 8 years so I want it to be somewhat futureproof.

What do you guys have/recommend?

I found when living in apartments it was nice having the 5GHz band as most everyone else in the building was using 2.4GHz. You'll have to pay more for a router with 5GHz and your devices may not be able to use this. They are usually advertised as "dual-band".

If you want it future proof look at something with "ac" or "802.11ac" as this is the latest wireless network standard. My smart phone is the only device I own that uses this standard right now but this will become more popular with time. b/g/n are the older standards that will work fine but will have lower expected throughput.

I would recommend looking into your ISP typical speeds and what plan you have with them. Even if you have a really kick-ass router your internet will still be slow if you get shitty speeds from your ISP.

I have used asus and d-link routers and have had good luck with them (knock on wood). If you really want to nerd out look into dd-wrt, open-wrt, or tomato open source router firmwares that you can flash to your router for more control and functionality.

If you go to Best buy and buy a $50 router itll be legit. I have a belkin 300n its like 4 years old and its still quite legit.

Honestly the best advice I can give you is don't cheap out. The $50 routers work, but they're shit and most of the time they don't last. Sometimes you get lucky - but honestly invest some more money and you'll get a way better product.

ASUS is the only brand you should use until one of the following brands decides to step up their game.

Apple's brand is solid, but expensive for what you get (Duh). Belkin has little to no quality control, so you'll either get one that lasts years or one that breaks in 3 months. Cisco/Linksys technology is really good for a reasonable price, as long as you're close to the router (signal drops off quickly).

The biggest thing these days is how many devices actually end up connecting. The lower end routers can't handle too many connections at once, and when a few people connect 4-5 devices per person they just choke out.

really? we have like 5 family members and we all have ipods and ipads hooked up to it, and i play a ton of cod on it too and everythings fine. whats the benefit of having a more expensive one?

i have one of those apple fucking white boxes of bullshit. the damn thing can't get connection to my room literally 17 steps away from it and i do not want to spend arm+leg to get another one to hook up to the original to boost range. definitely a piece of shit.

Found the website smallnetbuilder off of that reddit and it was super helpful. And thanks to everyone else for the suggestions.
