2 Stroke Vs. 4 STroke

my brother was really into moto cross until he broke his back. get out of it now and save yourself a hospital bill or better yet your life.

but as far as i know (i dont ride MX or anything) a 250 2 stroke is about the equivalent of a 450 4 stroke. so normally the 2 strokes have a bit more power and are louder. 2 strokes are good for riding at sand dunes where as 4 stokes can be used for more trail riding and everyday stuff. in racing ive seen people use both but the majority of peeps use 4 strokes from what ive seen.

note this is all ive gathered from my brother and am not into racing or anything.

shinbang was right about their uses, 4 stroke is better for hard pack and 2 for looser. but 4 strokes are gonna be faster because they double the displacement. the 4 stroke is a more user friendly power though because it puts out power on every other stroke, where a 2 stroke is a more explosive power. 4 strokes are also gonna be heavier. 2 strokes are easier to repair and work on since they are simpler as well

Just being nit-picky here, but every other stroke on a 2-stroke is the power stroke and every 4th on a 4-stroke is the power stroke.

2 strokes are a lot quicker than 4 strokes, theyre far more jumpy

I learned to ride with a clutch on my brothers 250 2 stroke when I was like 13. Once I got that thing to take off I was holding on for dear life. Ish was scary.

i think 2 strokes are more fun to ride, you just gotta know to the keep the rpms up with them. lots of top end power, much lighter than 4 strokes, and so simple that an infant child could rebuild one

Skiing equivalent, that's a tough one, years ago it could have been a two stroke was a pair of stiff poppy park skis and a 4 stroke would have been your everywhere ski that was good at everything, but not quite as poppy on the jumps.

shit I know a few people who have broken their backs skiing and another one mountain biking, and my parents knew people who were much worse off in car accidents...

These are different types of engines. There is no equivalent to skiing unless you are talking about a putting an engine on skis like a snow machine or jet ski both of which exist with both 2 and 4 stroke engines.

2 strokes generally have way better power-to-weight ratio. They're considerably less fuel efficient, tend to be noisier and less smooth than 4 strokes. 4 strokes are much more complex and expensive. They generally have a more linear power curve whereas 2 strokes are usually set up to have a region where they make a lot more power, this is the "power band" people refer to. 2 strokes can be set up to be reasonably linear though - look at outboard boat motors as a good example.

2 strokes also burn oil by design, either as pre-mix or through an oil injection system. This is because the bottom end and bore is lubricated by the fuel mixture instead of a dedicated sump, meaning oiling and lubrication is vastly simplified, and you can usually run 2 strokes on all sorts of crazy angles without them freaking out and dumping oil everywhere like a 4 stroke would. This makes them well suited to things like chainsaws and line trimmers.

4 strokes use a valvetrain to control the inlet and exhaust from the combustion chamber. 2 strokes use a porting system on the cylinder wall which, for at least part of the stroke, has both the inlet port and exhaust port open simultaneously, resulting in a quantity of unburnt fuel mixture being scavenged with the exhaust gas.

Skiing equivalent... I would say it's like rocker vs. camber - they each have a time and a place where one is better placed than the other, and you can't necessarily say that one is always the best.

My mom was always against me dirt biking or snowmobiling when I was young because she thought it was so dangerous and I'd break my neck doing it (She certainly had a point).

But here I am years later where my two of my biggest hobbies are freeskiing and downhill mountain biking. I like to ease her nerves with my third hobby: photography. But hell, when you gotta #GetTheShot, you gotta #GetTheShot...
