Thoughts on '99 Forester

All cars require upkeep. IMO foresters are on the better side of that. They seem to hold up well. Maybe not quite as good as an old honda civic or early 90s toyota tacoma, but they do pretty well and I'd throw them on the list of cars you can run forever.

Also, I try not to abuse my cars. I need a car to go places, and I try to take care of it to make sure that happens.

dane_wizwillardHonestly I wouldn't. You would be better off with a legacy or something, possibly a small 4x4 japanese truck would be a better bet. Don't get me wrong, the forester is a pretty fucking amazing vehicle (drove one up to my local hill in bunk as shit conditions and it was awesome) but I can't imagine the same awd platform in a car would feel that much different.

Foresters are built on the impreza platform so they drive pretty similar. If you look at the first gen foresters compared to the same generation of impreza they look the same inside just outside has a wagon added to it.

Buy it! haggle him down to around $4k though and you have a good deal. I have a 99 that went all the way up to 203k before the engine finally died. After that got a JDM EJ20G S/tb motor (same as the WRX except in Japan they put them in the Forester too, so bolts right in) that engine trans and LSD only had 40k miles on it and the thing hauls now. Such a cool sleeper. Brushing up against 60k miles on the new to me engine and trans and I love it.

I would check everything on it though, the 2.5's aren't as strong in my experience as the 2.0's. You'll be able to go everywhere and anywhere, also put some WRX suspension on that bad boy and you have a much better looking foz. Don't listen to the people that bash Subaru, they hold their value, parts are pretty cheap and plentiful and they're really not hard to do a lot of work yourself.

It really doesn't make to much of a difference. Unless you are doing serious racing in ithe and in that case you probably won't be using as an everyday car.
