Ultrarunner Scott Jurek arrived at the summit of Maine's Mount Katahdin at 2:05 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday, July 12, breaking the record for the fastest run across the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail. He finished in 46 days, 8 hours, and 7 minutes, beating the previous record by 3 hours and 13 minutes.

I followed his progress daily. He started off so strong and then had major problems in NH. He got the record through sheer determination, willpower, and intense suffering. A proud effort.

I know. ALmost would be more stoked beating it by so little because he came so damn close to doing all of that and not making it. Has to feel awesome to have felt it slipping away at the end, then pulled out every last bit of strength and endurance and made it happen.

How much smaller of a margin would you have wanted? The 3 hrs is only 0.5% of his time spent on the trail.

My coworker and good friend was part of the film crew that met up with him on the final day. I guess there's a big documentary in the works about his journey.

That IS his job. In the world of ultra running it's tough to get people outside the sport to give a fuck, and he just blew out into the mainstream spotlight which will pay out big for him no doubt.

Thats insane, Ive always wanted to backpack it but it takes forever! How did he get food, drink, etc? Did he carry his own supplies?

Into Mainstream? My guess this will be on the nightly news then we will all forget about it. Ask around in a year or two no one will remember. Not to take away from what they are doing as athletes, but "mainstream" is pushing it.

All you need is 5 minutes of national coverage and a good publicist. When was the last time you heard anything at all about any ultra runner? Probably never. That's all I'm getting at.
