MY Boyfriend and I are going on an almost 2 week road trip to colorado and utah. We plan on mainly camping, and by camping I mean back country camping. I have little experience with colorado, none with utah, and worse no backcountry camping experience. The closer the trip gets the more scared I am that I will be eaten by a bear, or a mountain lion, or both. Anyone care to share any good advice? Or am I just doomed? more info we plan on hiking Mt. Elbert, Cathedral lake, and most of the ntl parks in utah (arches, canyonlands, bryce, and zion). HELP ME!!!!
Take the steps necessary to avoid getting eaten by wild animals. Plan accordingly and be smart. Do your research on what to do and more importantly what NOT to do.
If you do that im sure you wont die..
Don't keep food in your tent. Hang it from a tree far enough away from your sight.
That said you probably won't even encounter anything crazy in a short trip. It would be vary unlikely to run into a mountain lion.
You'll be fine. Honestly the drive there is massively more risky than your camping experience. Bring a few beers or some liquor and have a bit around a campfire the first night. A good fire is always nice for keeping the animals, or the boogeyman away. Drink a bit, get relaxed and go to sleep.
Are people killed by big animals? Of course, but it's very unlikely. You probably have a better chance falling out of your car, choking on your dinner, etc.

Elbert is one of the easiest 14ers to hike. Just start early because we get lightning/thunder storms almost every day in the summer and you DO NOT want to get stuck in one at the top of a 14er.
Cathedral lake is fucking beautiful. You will love it.
As far as bears, hang your food up high in a tree at night.
I live in the Aspen area, so I know the areas you're talking about fairly well. Feel free to PM me if you need any local advice.
Purchase some bear mace. Don't go off and get lost or do anything stupid either. Your own actions will get you killed before a bear does. Hang your food in a tree way from your tent too.
I'm sure you'll be fine.
Most importantly, have fun! Don't let all the worrying get to you because that just ruins the trip.
Bears and mountain lions are highly unlikely. We don't have grizzlies in utah anyway and the little black bears are pretty much harmless, they run away if you yell at them (and they're also not a concern in southern utah). Mountain lions are extremely rare and don't like hanging out around people. You are way more likely to run into rattlesnakes and tarantulas. And even if you got a rattlesnake bite you'd still be fine assuming you went to a hospital, so there's nothing to worry about.

Mt. Elbert is really fun. make sure to start early or lightning will keep you from summiting. As long as you keep food and things the bear might like up in a tree the chances of a bear or mountain lion encounter are extremely rare. camping is really fun but make sure you bring everything you need.

If you run out of water any tree or plant with a white sap will quench your thirst like no other. Remember to buy your hiking boots at least one size smaller as they will stretch A LOT - there's nothing worse than hiking boots that are too big. Also, remember to listen to everyone on NS as everyone on this site skis therefore are survival experts.
Above all remember that your going for a whole two weeks, which is almost enough time to starve to death - you should probably bring some crackers just in case.
