50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War

So it's been 50 years since Vietnam threatened to tear apart the U.S. It's been 50 years since Americans suffered in possibly the most psychologically dark place the U.S has ever fought a war. I'm sure a good number of people on NS including myself know veterans of that war, i.e Chopper mavericks, flyboys, medics, grunts, etc. Whether the war was moral or immoral is too complicated to tell. I just think the vets deserve a little commemoration on this day. Discuss.

Three of my uncles were in Vietnam. One was in the Brown Water Navy, boy does he have some stories.

They served our country well, and I thank them.

I respect the veterans that fought in that war. But going there in the first place was a really bad idea.

Here's something crazy, the average infantryman in Vietnam saw significantly more combat time then infantryman during WWII.

According to the History Channel, the average WW2 infantryman saw 40 days of combat a year. The average Vietnam infantryman saw 240 days of combat a year.

wow, i didn't realize that. that's insane! i've always kind of wondered why vietnam vets had a harder time readjusting, but that makes it much easier to understand....talk about a mind fuck.

My grandpa was in the 101st Airborn and was there from 67 to 68. He said on several ocassions they were out in the field for over 50 days in a row. That's 50 days
in the same cloths outside in a thick ass jungle. The government of the time should have been thrown in prison for what they put these men through.

A lot of my dad's friends served in nam. His best friends dad actually lost his life over there.


Im gonna watch vietnam in HD on netlfix now.

I think the fact that the Marines still use variants of the Huey really proves how good of a design it is (plus the fact the Marine Corps needs to save money at any opportunity so upgrading makes more sense than replacing).

Never got to ride on a huey though. Only blackhawks and chinooks.

I know a few veteran's and mad creds to them for their bravery.

Politically the reason why we entered into that war and kept on going were complete bullshit. Its really sad to see the MIC cause so much death and destruction.

If you're into documentaries it's amazing. It blows WWII in HD out of the water and I'm much more interested in WWII. The interviews are better because of the age of the interviewees and the footage is much more HD.

I still can't believe some of the shit that went down over there. Door gunners shooting their own guys by accident, giving ground back after losing hundreds to take it, massacres, horrible VC traps, it just goes on and on.

That's fucking insane. And in some of the most horrific fighting conditions modern warfare has ever seen. I don't support the war and the reasons it was fought, but I have nothing but respect and deference for those who served there. They deserve ultimate gratitude from every US citizen.

Though it's not for lack of trying, I of course have trouble internalizing and understanding the feelings that combat evokes, because I've never been there. Vietnam is on another level, beyond imagination. You can watch movies and get chills, mad feels, etc, but I'm sure nothing compares to what our veterans saw when they were over there, or what they see when they close their eyes and remember. Absolutely fucked.

To all veterans: Thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

Horrible and pointless war. The worst part is we drafted kids into it. That's what bothers me the most.

Then the veterans who came back with all kinds of problems we;re just kind of like hey, good luck.

We did more than that. We spit on them, threw things at them, yelled at them, and shunned them from society. Probably one of the worst things the American public has ever done.

idk, "The Pacific" was pretty fucking good, too. I almost think I like that one more than BOB.

On another note, this thread totally inspired me to go watch Vietnam in HD. Been watching that shit at work all day today...

I'm not going to lie I'm super biased towards BoB, but The Pacific was really good too. It was darker and grittier imo which is mostly because the pacific theatre was actually darker and grittier.

I actually preferred Generation Kill over The Pacific though because I can relate to it more.

They need to do some sort of Vietnam miniseries on par with bob/pacific.

I'm partial to Bob as well having seen it 6 times through and the Pacific only 2 times through.

I have yet to see generation kill, definitely on my to see list though.

I don't know...BoB was REALLY good too. I can't really say definitively which one i like more because I love them both....

And Generation Kill was fucking awesome as well. Jah - you HAVE to see it.

Actually it was closer to 10 days a year.

I can't imagine what those men in Vietnam went through. It literally sounds like living hell.

If you guys are interested, the documentary series Vietnam in HD from the history channel (it's on netflix) is really, really good. Be prepared to see some insane fucked up footage though. It actually gave me nightmares after I watched it.

Little late on this but horrible war; its good to see now that were more focused on rehabilitation of armed forces LARGELY in part because of a lot of the psychological damage observed as a result of vietnam.

Just so sad that they had to be the guinea pigs.
