Best City to Live in Now that I'm an Adult

I'm going to finally graduate college in December with an environmental engineering degree and I imagine my best job prospects are going to be in a city instead of a resort town. I figure while its summer and I'm only working part time I ought to start looking for jobs now. Let's here some suggestions. Salt Lake City, Denver, Vancouver, Reno? I'm in the Denver metro area right now and it's sick when I can ski on a week day, but I-70 weekend traffic is killer. I skied snowbird for the first time this winter and was surprised by how minimal the traffic was by comparison, but I've heard horror stories about the Mormon population. I imagine the ski community in Salt Lake is rad, but I'm worried about company politics that might hold me back if I don't fit into their idea of a professional.

Also where can I find a good place to go night skiing? Boreal is sick, you can make laps on their park until 9 pm. And my home resort was rad as well some of the best power I had growing up was on a Thursday night when the resort was empty.

Also, this probably isn't high up on your list, but have you considered the east? I know the skiing is a lot different out this way, but Burlington VT is technically a city.

there is a very similar culture in salt lake city. the smog gets everyone worked up and suddenly everybody is an environmentalist

SLC is legit, I wouldnt worry about the mormons, i know plenty of people who work with mormons/for mormons at big companies and its fine. More and more huge companies are coming to slc as well, the local economy is booming. Plus you're 30-40 minutes (depending on where you live) from 7 of the best ski resorts in the country and traffic is nothing compared to i70.

Very untrue, the air quality is only bad 1-3 months in the winter depending on the weather and half of the time the air quality is fine and its just foggy. You don't live in utah, so stfu.

Looking like Salt Lake is the place to be, less ski traffic, Park City has dope edits all the time and snow bird has steep runs and huge cliffs and it looks like about 200 inches more no per year than arapahoe basin. Eheath is there weekday night skiing to be had at any of the resorts? And is it good? Keystone was a let down when I moved to colorado, only groomers were open and the park was closed. I want to be able to get after some rails after work.

Brighton has night skiing til 9pm its most of their park and some fun groomers. park city has night skiing til 8pm and its the entire pick and shovel park and another lift with a pretty fun groomer.

SLC is fun to visit and ski the mountains but don't live here the people and the air suck so bad. Honestly slc is stuck in the 90's and most people around this age group are huge d bags. People get so clicky you honestly feel like you're in highschool again. I am not even going to go in the fact that drinking sucks here and the drivers are the worst in the world. Beautiful area with great skiing but way to many shitty people, no booze, shit weed, shit strip clubs, shitty people, really bad drivers, and cops that will shoot you for having headphones on.

West Michigan, along the lakeshore. Grand Haven to be exact A lot of ski resorts within close proximity and you can't beat the lakeshore during the summer!

I think what e heath is trying to get at is, if you are a douche bag then you will love slc. and i can't argue with that. SLC does have some good people but for the most part it seems like night and day to how chill Denver is or Portland or Seattle. OP, bottom line, your preference for how you like to live is on you. visit these places and actually spend sometime there meeting the people and make your own opinion. Slc is a beautiful place to live but will beat you down if you let it. Plenty of great ski towns on the west coast so do some exploring and find out what you like.

I live in slc.

Im defiantly exaggerating some of this but it's defiantly not my number one place either but it could be someones i guess. Plus im actually stoked to see third eye blind. OP the dumbest thing you could do is base your decision of moving to a new town on the responses of an internet forum. Experience it for yourself because im sure you have personal preferences for your personal living style and no one can figure that out for you.

I live in SLC but exaggerated a little about how bad it is. For the most part it's a beautiful area but there is a lot of weird shit that goes on here that is not normal for the rest of the world in my experiences.

pre-season will get going in october or november. post season ends when all the snow in little cottonwood is gone, and i think there still might be some there now. barely any, tho. resort seasons normally go mid nov - mid/end of april for brighton, pc, canyons, and deer valley. alta will go into may, bird may go into june depending on snow.

Having spent a bit of time in SLC and Denver, I would Say SLC for sure. There are no mountains near Denver that compare to Alta/Bird in my opinion, and I-70 blows.

SLC has much less of a party scene, but it seems like a nicer city in general.

I might be biased because I'm moving to SLC in a month

Id give Reno a significant edge overall to SLC but its smaller and less reliable snowfall.



Not sure anywhere else of decent size will be closer to skiing and any better for jobs than Denver.

Visit and figure out what you like. Seattle, Portland, Denver, Reno, SLC, SF, etc are all pretty different and have their own advantages and disadvantages. I live in the city with arguably the worst skis of that group (Portland), but it is the city I enjoy the most. I personally could never live in SLC, but there are a ton of people that live in SLC and love it and would probably hate it in Portland as well.

No one can really tell you what you are going to like. All are close enough to take a road trip or hop on a cheap Southwest flight to see what is the best fit for you.

When I graduated college, I moved down to Portland for a year, after being very split as to move to Portland or Seattle after college. After one year in Portland, I had the opportunity to potentially move up to Seattle before ON3P officially got started. I went to school 30 minutes south of Seattle, so I had spent a fair bit of time there, but never more than a night or two at a time. So I took 4 days, went up and saw the neighborhoods I was interested in and just the vibe. Drank, ate, walked around, drove around, just trying to get a feel for the day to day. While I liked it, and it is likely where I would live if I wasn't in Portland, it just wasn't the same being down in Portland (for me), so I stayed, am still here 6 years later, and won't move anytime soon. Mind you, I've also spent a lot of time in Denver (which would likely come in 3rd for me), and enough time in SLC to know that it isn't for me.

You're young, so you can always spend a few years in a city and move. But as to whether or not is it the best city that you're an adult, it is all about personal fit, so visit them, because none of us here can tell you what is going to be the best city for you.

The biggest issue in my book, and the reason i am not working there right now is that it is NOT a multicultural, metropolitan city. I personally value that a ton.


Cities that have have the outdoors + have all the benefits of a big multicultural city- Seattle, Denver, to a lesser extent Portland(but just because of its size, and San Francisco (3 hours to skiing, but its the raddest skiing around).



That said, it is a really cool place, and its good to move around a bit when youre young- you dont know what you dont know about citys, nahmean?

I lived in Reno for 4 years for college and it is a massively underrated ski town. The cost of living is low enough you can afford to ski and work a lame part time job but there is also a good amount of better paying employment. One year I worked for the state government and still got to ride 3 days a week at nearby Mt Rose. Also Boreal season pass was $99 last year and even with no snow I could go get park laps after work only 45 minutes away. The major downside is Reno is an ugly town. Gambling, Tweakers and just overall brownness are some of it's major characteristics. No traffic, affordable quality housing, and access in under 1.5 hours to Northstar,Squaw,Alpine,Heavenly,SugarBowl,Kirkwood etc. etc. are the perks. If you move to Reno spend every day of summer at the lake.

You weren't 21 you can't benefit from the upsides of gambling this dude said he graduated from college.

Legal sports betting, free alcohol never pay for a beer in a casino, 24/7 nightlife and food, since Vegas is played out and a major destination which doesn't have to compete for tourists and generally isn't cheap in Reno you get what Vegas used to be 20 years ago.

(One losing session of craps of a few hundred bucks at the Atlantis 5 years ago bumped my players card up enough that I get free buffet every Tuesday for life basically for example.)

I was 21 when I lived in Reno and had a fake id well before that, but yeah casinos have perks forsure. I never bought drinks and played penny slots when I went downtown. Most casinos also let you cash your paycheck for free and throw in a couple vouchers for more free drinks. But overall I would rather spend a day in the woods then on a smokey casino floor with a bunch of overweight zombies hooked up to oxygen tanks.

Calgary is a sick place to live. Sprawling economy,greenest city in the world (apparently),and C.O.P (Canada Olympic Park has a sick park)is right in the city and the mountains are an hour drive!

Calgary is alright. Decent ski hills are 2 hours away. Although Calgary is in the west and we like to think we get a lot of snow, we don't. That and skis resorts here charge you up the ass for passes compared to somewhere like Revelstoke. However the economy is pretty good and COP is sweet because its open until 9pm so you can ski anytime in the day.

the problem is that the economy in Calgary isn't sustainable. It's based on oil and in 10 to 15 years when that's gone and everyone is whizzing around in plutonium powered hovercars the high salaries of Calgary will be a thing of the past

About a year ago i was living in SF and in a situation where i could pretty much pick any city in America to live and work(a professional job). The cities that i looked at moving to were:

Seattle
Portland
Reno
Denver
Santa Fe
Bend


I picked Seattle because it consistently gets big snow(except the record drought of last year haha), has world class big-time terrain, is a world class metropolitan city, is 45mins-2 hours away from skiing, is in the Mecca of MTB(incase the snow fails), and has a much lower cost of living than i was used to SF. It also has... and this is a big one for me... Girls. With a big population base there are a lot of females to meet, date, fuck, look at, and pine for.

For me, Seattle had the whole package and i am super stoked to be living here.

I just graduated from CU (environmental studies actually) and I'm actually moving to SLC later this week because this ^^ is the advice and vibe I got from my friends out there. After spending the last 4 years commuting on i70 I am DANG PUMPED to only drive 30 minutes to ski plus a ton of outdoor brands are based out of there/ relocating there. I've checked out SLC on three different occasion this summer and every time liked it more, especially when I figured out how massive the ski community is. SLC is something like less than 20% Mormon now and honestly I've never had an off-putting experience. Just be a decent human as you should anywhere and you won't have issues at work.

Denver definitely has a lot of environmental stuff going for it, I'd prefer to live near Boulder still if I was staying in CO. Plenty of friends have moved to Denver after graduation. I also have two friends with environmental engineering jobs in summit county and they live in Dillon. Both cities are on the rise for sure. Think the biggest upside to SLC is people are so "omg but mormons and no beer" that they don't move to Utah, therefore more skiing for everyone who does decide to check it out.

Bozeman would also be a rad place to live and Big Sky and Bridger are insane. No idea what the engineering job market would be like out there but worth looking into. Oh also I don't know what it gets into exactly but I know Alta has an environmental center and Aspen and Whistler are both immensely environmentally conscious resorts who probably have engineers on staff if you're thinking of working for a resort at all.
