I was skiing at cardrona yesterday, and I had been lapping some chutes among the boulders, and all of a sudden my ski randomly ejected and i tomahawked down the mountain about 500 feet only to be stopped by the force of my head smashing on some rocks. I was totally fine besides being shaken up and a little bruised, but my helmet 100% saved my life. Its not like I fell because I am bad, I was shredding harder than most people out there, it was totally random. I don't care if you think it looks cool to not wear a helmet, I would have been human jelly if it wasn't for mine. I just want my fellow newschoolers to wear one, or at least share the story to maybe help one other person avoid life ruining injury.

life is unpredictable. helmets can be lifesaving even if you have an accident that might not be your fault whatsoever (maybe you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time). preaching for helmet advocacy won't get anywhere, unfortunately, until people/ organizations take a different approach. park city, for example, did so by requiring their riders to wear helmets when filming for the IRPC edits this season. now the skiers/ snowboarders probably weren't very happy about this and that's why, as right as your are, it will always come down to personal choice.
you don't wear a helmet for the majority of activities you do in life (eating, running, driving, playing frisbee, dancing, swimming, drinking....), so putting one on for skiing seems unnatural. now maybe this activity is inherently more dangerous than other (more casual) life activities, but for skiing to be natural and relaxed, helmets often don't factor in the mix.

there are sooooo many valid points from both sides and honestly, you're right. everyone should wear a helmet for their own safety and out of respect for friends and family.. but does that mean all skateboarders should wear a helmet too, or that you should never ride a skateboard, bike, snowboard, pair of skis without a helmet on... maybe. but we're a long ways from getting there so for now let's focus on safety as a whole, on or off the mountain, regardless of helmet usage.
Stept productions are pretty lucky that they didn't have anyone in their crew die from a head injury. Only time I ever saw anyone of them wear a helmet was when Cam Boll was trying to nail that massive red DFD.

Because stept is the only crew of skiers that some of the guys dont wear helmets...
I caught an edge skiing some tight chutes at abasin last season and if i didnt have a helmet on i would be dead i hit a tree and a 3 inch branch stub essentially punctured the out side of my helmet. I had a photo but it got lost with my phone.
Was doing 270s onto this one rail at hood a week ago and after I did it time and time again good I did it once after I took a break and my edge caught on the rail and my head smacked the rail. Probably would have had a bad concussion if it wasn't for my helmet!
agree 100 percent. my friend and local hero died from hitting urban while not wearing a helmet. fell on a down flat down hit his head on the stairs, felt fine, didn't wake up the next morning, taken to a hospital in a vegetative state, died the next 2 days. please wear a helmet people its no fun seeing homies and loved ones die because they didnt wear a helmet. SKI IN PEACE WILLY

same here, came from racing, so wore a helmet all my life. I do really life the feel of a hat or beanie in the park (hate it for pow though, just feels way too casual for something that is so special), but having a sound system in my helmet really gets me to wear it most of the time (won't ever be able to switch to earbuds or headphones, helmet sound is just so easy).

When the going gets serious and I'm bout try something new I get the helmet on. When I'm chillin doing stuff I have down pat I feel its not that necessary...
Forcing people to wear helmets will probably decrease their popularity. However if like Stept wore helmets when they're goin ham it'd pry get more kids to want to ride with a helmet. Whatever though, I'm not really adding anything previously unknown to the debate, and I believe everyone is free to do what they want. Choices

My friend got a concussion, while wearing a helmet, from trying to pop onto a box that was an inch of the ground and like two feet long when he caught his tips under the box ejected and hit his head. He didn't know what day it was, probably would have been worse if he didnt have a helmet on

Dude I know broke his arm and got a concussion from not skiing but jumping on my friends backyard rail in the summer...lol he slipped when trying to jump 180 on it and ate shit....we all laughed so hard untill we realized he was in a ton of pain and not moving.
