Action sport with most deaths among pros

which action sport suffers the most deaths among its professionals?

i'm going to go out on a limb and guess it's kayaking. i'm being serious. really fucking dangerous sport.

after that, i'd have to say that skiing has had the worst luck with fatalities among its pros.

your take?

wouldn't call it luck, but for sure its unfortunate. Skiing has progressed and will continue to progress at such a high rate that injury is much more likely than in previous years. It really sucks that the skiing community has lost so many.

yeah youre right, paddling claims a really surprising number of lives. without looking into it at all, my first guess at the cause of that might be the ol' problem with water sports, where bumping your head can leave you unconscious and drowning rather than lying on the ground for a while

BASE jumping and rock climbing have to be up there on the list, no surprises there...

mtn biking is super super gnarly but i can't imagine they have nearly as many deaths as we do

i think skiing might be a little unique in that we have two major aspects of danger: the inherent danger of flying down and off mountains in new and creatively stupid ways, and avalanches. i can't think of any other sport that suffers equally from "acts of God" and our own contrived danger (and, of course, many avy incidents combine those two categories)

Base jumping
Speed flying
Mountaineering
Hang gliding
Skydiving
Extreme Skiing
Kayaking
Rock climbing

Someone pull up the study with deaths-per-million days that was published a few years back. High altitude mountaineering was at the top by a significant amount I think.

Amongst pros, wingsuit. For the very small amount of people doing it, you hear of a lot of deaths, most of them professionals in some way.

I would say FMX is up there if not the highest, it's had a lot of fatalities sadly. Maybe not as much as some other sports but it also has a lot less participants due to the high risk and lack of accessibility.

Actually it's motorcross, compared to a lot of other sports statisticly we haven't had as many deaths.

Snocross or freestyle snowmobiling is pretty risky. There have been many deaths and injuries. I think its been removed from the xgames because of it. http://espn.go.com/action/story/_/id/7039885/winter-x-games-eliminates-snowmobile-snocross-speed-style

If you're talking ratio of people who have died doing the sport to people who have been ok doing the sport, Then base jumping

To be honest, i would have to say ice climbing. The pillars that they climb on, crack and fall. Its a sketchy sport.
