CARLSBAD, CA (June 30, 2015) - POWDER, The Skier's Magazine, announces an extensive investment in multimedia digital features and video with the introduction of Powder Productions—an in-house production studio.
"The appetite for high-quality content, especially video, continues to increase each season," says POWDER General Manager Ashley Otte. "Using the foundation of our award-winning print, digital, and social properties, Powder Productions will develop the same high-caliber content we've curated over the last four decades into the realm of video while continuing our innovative digital features."
The focus of Powder Productions will be storytelling told through feature film, video, and digital features. The production house will offer a complete portfolio from short-form to long-form original video.
Former POWDER Editor John Stifter will be taking the lead role as executive producer to execute the launch and development of the studio, while collaborating with the POWDER editorial staff. After three years as editor and seven volumes as a full-time POWDER staffer, Stifter will be responsible for the overall video strategy, transferring premium storytelling from print and digital into film. He'll also continue to manage POWDER's award-winning digital features. Under his leadership as editor, the title won eight national magazine awards, two for digital features and one for Best Video Channel (Powder TV). Additionally, in January 2015, POWDER was named a National Magazine Award finalist—the first-ever for a ski magazine—in the multimedia category for "The Human Factor."
"The last three years as editor have been a dream lived," says Stifter. "I'm humbled and grateful to past and current staffers and readers for the opportunity to have a voice in such a beautiful community. With Powder Productions, I'm looking forward to advancing POWDER's digital properties and captivating our consumers with premium storytelling in digital features, video, and film, integrating a tone and perspective that no one else can deliver in the outdoor community."
Joining Stifter on the Powder Productions team is video editor Hennie van Jaarsveld. The Salt Lake City resident has been a staff editor at production house Camp 4 Collective and events company Mountain Sports International the last five years.
"It's an exciting collaboration where I can take my video skills and pair them up with some high-class writing to produce the best possible content," says van Jaarsveld.
