why should we donate our hard earned money to tsunami victims?

Every time I turn on the TV I see all this shit about helping victims of the tsunami 'crisis.' Fundraisers, telethons, government support, and celebrities either out of the goodness of their heart of for PR are donating large sums of cash. Why should we give our money to these victims. It's not like we asked for them to be hit by a giant wave. I know they didn't ask for it either, but these same people didn't ask to be dying of hunger, disease and poverty before they were hit by a wave and we didn't hit them then. Why should we help them now.
My point isn't that we shouldn't help them, it's that there's an AIDS crisis in Africa, and a poverty crisis all over the world. This has been for decades, and yet we've never had this kind of determination to help the less fortunate before. Why is this any different? Why couldn't Micheal Schumaker donate $10 Million to diseased, uneducated, hungry orphans in Indonesia a month ago? Why do we all care now?

in response to 'trixta' 's last reply...that's the point. we would want someone to help us if we were in the same situation. the problem with that is, that's all that would happen, we would WANT, and WISH, and HOPE. and all that wishing wouldn't do us a damn bit of good, because noone would 'come to our rescue' like we have done for so many other countries. we foot the bill for EVERYTHING. what country rushed in and donated $350 Million to the united states when we went through OUR recent crisis? yeah i'm talking about 9/11. maybe a few small independent groups/countries donated a bit of money or aid, but not $350 million. and yes, i know that the situation over there is much different because loss of life/damage is much greater, but it's the principle. we act like the world's police force. we try to rescue everybody else and do everyone's dirty work. we try to play hero. who's gonna be our hero? and how about right now, we all stop using that ugly word 'stingy'. that's a poor fucking term for the united states. like i already said, we do EVERYTHING. we are the most generous and willing country in the entire world. $350 million. Three Hundred and fifty-fucking-million!!! that's a good chunk of change no matter how you look at it. we could EASILY have said screw you guys, we're putting our would-be donation to use in our contry for a change. we're going to give a better quality of life to less fortunate AMERICANS. god knows we need it just the same. i'm sick of everybody bitching. it makes no sense. i know everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but people who talk negatively about Bush's idea of 'enough' aid simply are not taking into account what it really, truly means. we do so much for so many. when's it our turn? that's not being selfish, that's wondering when it's time for someone else to play 'hero'. let france rush to the rescue.

It's definetly bizarre. I think that the shock alone of something as unfathomable as a wave killing over 150 000 people has opened the world's wallets. Now that the hype machine is rolling though I think most people feel the need and responsibility to donate. If 150 000 people were to die of AIDS in a week in Africa then I think there would be more interest in helping to alleviate that situation. I just think alot of the media and support (pleases don't confuse the two) are strictly based around the shock.

davidh, if the underlying problem is testing and education, how are they supposed to know any better?
when you get aids you really don't know it untill possibly many years down the road. So by that time that the person finds out it's too late. The same girl that gave it to him could have slept with many other people and the guy that finds out may have slepts with a ton of women too. It's already passed on before it's noticed.
