Why do people drink alcohol?

Peer pressure is the reason that a lot of people start drinking. That's pretty lame though. People shouldn't be judged for drinking soda instead of alcohol.

I would say people drink for quite a few different reasons including but not limited to the feeling it gives, social pressure, cultural, pride, ect...

At 18 I can say I have never drank nor do I intend to due to past personal experiences. I however do not have any problem with others choosing to do so so long as they are responsible with it and it doesn't negatively impact their children's lives.

People can drink whatever they want imo but people shouldn't be judged for drinking alcohol instead of soda.

Honestly soda is bad for you anyway. Drink some water.

People drink alcohol to let go, socialize without inhibitions, forget about their problems, make their friends/town/life in general more interesting, many reasons.

Nope not even close to the same thing. All of these things can be prevented. That's why skiers wear helmets, pilots can wear oxygen masks, and simply not drinking. There's many other things that can cause brain cell loss. It's not too hard to figure out.

Maybe if you're 16 or something you think alcohol tastes like crap. But once you get older and start drinking more ales rather than shitty american mass produced lagers you realize beer is amazing.

Nope, it's definitely the same thing. Helmets don't prevent concussions. Studies have shown that there is some level of brain damage at altitudes even as low as 13-14000 feet. Nobody who hikes 14ers uses oxygen.

Point being that likely many practices you take part in on a daily basis slightly lower brain function.

People actually like the taste of a good beer, other than that its just to get drunk. I dont really drink but mixed drinks are pretty good but shit like sam adams, ipa and other shitty beer is gross. I will be honest stuff like Mikes hard and other girly drinks are pretty good. I prefer pot over alcohol though.

helmets can help to a certain extent, but they only do so much. Tons of football players, hockey players, and athletes in any sport where helmets are worn get concussions. Helmets are far from an end all be all savior for your dome

Ultimately it's all about enjoying yourself, and people should to do that however they want. It's my personal opinion that drinking is great and facilitates awesome experiences with friends.

I'll admit it, I can be a bit of a peer pressurer. Not in the sense that I'm going to call you lame if you don't drink; you can do whatever you want and if you're cool, we can be friends. However, I find that when my friends and I get drunk, funny stuff happens and everyone has a good time. In my experience, even if people are a little hesitant about going ham, they almost always make memories that they look back on with a smile or a high five or a laugh, even if at the time it's not exactly where you want to be. I think people end up being proud of memories and experiences like that because our generation typically regards those things as 'cool' or 'legit' so if you've done them, you feel like you stack up. I'm always the one who brings extra beer and booze to parties, planning to make it disappear for the good of the rage.

I know that I wouldn't have had the same level of fun in undergrad if I hadn't drank. I had some wild nights - not hookers and blow wild, just weird fun with my friends. Our group of about 10 friends would drink all night and then my roommate would inevitably start putting on the ballads. I'm talking Phil Collins, Steve Winwood, Elton John. We'd stand on furniture and belt out the lyrics, often banging pots and pans along with the songs. "BRING ME A HIGHER LOVE, DOO DO DOO DO DOOOO!" I'm not an idiot, but it was most definitely idiotic fun and made for some of the best memories I've made to date.

I think drinking (and most experimentation in life) is worth a try. If you try it with fun and supportive friends and don't like it, fine, do you. If you can get weird and rage without booze, more power to ya! But often with things like this, they take time to grow on you. You could try it once, but statistically that doesn't give you a very good chance of having an amazing night, at least enough so to get you to do it again.

I just like trying things. Life is about experiences, and you'll never really know about something unless you experience it. Obviously some people have compelling reasons for not drinking - the bad experiences of others close to them, disease and addiction, etc. It's also my opinion that people under the age of 18 shouldn't binge drink - it's not good for the developing brain. However, I think going through life saying "I just don't really see the appeal" to everything (including drinking) will lead to a boring existence if you've never tried it yourself.

I hope that came out right. I'm tired so I don't know if I communicated that well. Bottom line is to each their own, but IMO it's worth the experience to at least give most things a good ol' college try.
