So people post all these memes, articles, and whatever about how they need guns to protect themselves against the government and what not.

Saw one that said "I don't need a gun or want a gun, but I have a gun and if the government ever says I can't that's when I'll need a gun" or something like that. It's a nice sentiment, the old cowboy standing up to the evil lawman to take back the town kind of deal.

At the same time, when the fuck is anyone ever going stand up to the government with their guns? I'm not saying they should or shouldn't just that it's something I can't really see happening. At the same time they're bitching about how they need guns to protect their freedoms, they're voting/supporting the people who are oppressing them and stripping them of the freedoms that they supposedly need guns to protect.

If you can't even stand up to the government with a ballot, you sure as fuck aren't going to do anything constructive with your guns.

Unlike most people on NS, I actually do know what I am talking about. I hunt turkeys with 3.5 inch Winchester XTended Range HeavyShot. I very much know what the load can do. And you should not be shooting slugs out of your turkey barrel, regardless of what choke you have in it. Get a slug barrel and swap them out after hunting season. As a bonus, it will work for deer or other larger game.

Not only do they look nearly identical, they are completely functionally the same. No difference at all. Yes, our gun laws are really dumb.


We are basically in the same boat. Russian imported firearms are banned due to the sanctions. There's also something with pre ban and post ban aks but I don't know the details on that. However, something like a Century Arms C39 is ok.

Uhhh no. Rifled slug in a smooth bore barrel, non rifled slug in a rifled barrel. As long as you follow that it will not damage youre barrel, if you have a choke under full in. A rifled slug barrel with a saboted slug will shoot farther and more accurate, but i dont need to shoot 150 + yards inside my house, and i dont hunt with slugs at all

also depends if you are talking about freedoms within a state or the country as a whole.

For example, gambling and prostitution are legal at a federal level here in Austria but not at the federal level in the USA (only certain states). So it kinda depends on where your door is, and in that sense you are limited and not as free.

There were 55 wounded and 10 shot dead in chicago just while I was there this weekend. Chicago's had it's share of violence even dating back to the original gangsters during alcohol prohibition but that' still pretty gnarly to think about.

I think legalizing all drugs would do a lot to curb gang violence in the long run. People are buying guns with drug money to protect drug profits, and shooting the piss out of each other over anything and everything.

Don't forget Japan too. Out of Japan's 130 million people, they average something like 2 gun related deaths per year. Not only is it illegal to own a gun (there is only 1 kind of gun a person can own and it is a special government approved shotgun for hunting purposes only and the owner must go über extensive background checks, mental stability examinations, prove to the police each year they know how to operate/care for the gun, provide explicit directions where/how the gun is stored, and take a special test every 3 years or so) but even the Yakuza (their mafia) tend not to use guns.

It's also illegal to own a sword, which if you know anything about their samurai-based history, is probably more shocking than telling Americans they shouldn't own a gun.

I'm just saying a smaller island nation versus our big fat ass country with land borders is a different scenario.

I mean drugs are illegal as fuck and they're everywhere. The problem is the demand is there. Same with guns. People sell drugs, buy guns, use guns to defend against other people and or protect their turf so they can sell drugs.

Remove the drug trade and I think we'd see a large decline in urban shootings and have a far better chance of getting guns off the street. What are these kids going to work at mcdonalds to pay for their weapons? And if they can't sell drugs, there's not much of a business to fight over anymore.

The average person that owns a gun is not going around shooting people. That said there are plenty of gun accidents but that doesn't seem to be the target of most of this stuff.

If we could curb gun violence in the inner city it would drop those numbers hard.

True, but just because they're island countries does not mean they're immune to smuggling or problems that a more land-locked country would have generally. The gun problems that South Carolina or Oklahoma or New York have aren't due to boarder problems they have (for sure there are states that do though). Plus, they have WAY stricter drug laws than the USA.

Regardless, Japan's population density and "need for protection" against possible crime are very analogous to situations faced in many parts of America whether they are an island nation or not.

They had almost zero gun deaths last year, compared to all which is in the thousands, cant just sweep that under the rug by saying giant coultural differences. Also they have a really big mafia in Japan and they have crime.

While our cultures are very different, they still share so many common "human" problems living in society and thus share a lot of the same basic experiences, just with slightly different characteristics.

And I do favor gun control (not gun elimination) since I think it is in our government's list of duties to protect its citizens (from external threats, internal threats, each other etc). Personally, I do find it odd that we allow so many different types of weapons to be owned by private citizens with very little regulation & yearly checks to ensure they are fit to own such weapons. Especially when, as you note, the constitution clearly says for the purposes of arming a well regulated militia.

Will an amendment happen in my lifetime? Most likely not, I'm not holding my breath. But I do think that reasonable people should be allowed to own reasonable weapons in a reasonable way. If that seems likes crazy talk to some people (not directed at you Cobra), then those people need to reexamine a few points of human existence.

Basically, I think pretty much any and all guns should be available for ownership with no additional fees or taxes. BUT the screening process to get the guns should be akin to that of a secret service agent.


Personally, I'd rather have a crazy guy intent on mass murder have a knife, not a semi automatic assault rifle with a few banana clips. Idk, that just might be me though haha.

The past 15 years should indicate the ability of a small minority of lightly armed individuals can do to hamstring the strategic intent of the worlds most powerful military force.
If there was a people vs THEGOV conflict, the U.S. Government and thus the Military could not afford to be as aggressive as we have been in Iraq and Afganistan. they would loose their credibility as the government of the United States.

that is all beside the point since the biggest barrier between an authoritarian government take over is the U.S. Army. our loyalty lies with the U.S. Constitution, not the executive, legeslative, or judial branch.

That hat all said, 99.9% of the U.S. Military is in favor of reducing barriers to civilian gun ownership.

The 2A makes no mention of 'reasonable.' You can think it is outdated. I can think the 3A is outdated. Doesn't give me the right to show up, take over your house and use it to quarter soldiers. Have breakfast ready at 0530...

If you want to ammend the Constitutio w/ regards to the 2A, there is a proces. Go for it. Good luck amending the Constitution in a manner that reduces the rights of the citizens.

If there was a people vs THEGOV conflict, the U.S. Government and thus the Military could not afford to be as aggressive as we have been in Iraq and Afganistan. they would loose their credibility as the government of the United States.

that is all beside the point since the biggest barrier between an authoritarian government take over is the U.S. Army. our loyalty lies with the U.S. Constitution, not the executive, legeslative, or judial branch.

That hat all said, 99.9% of the U.S. Military is in favor of reducing barriers to civilian gun ownership.

The 2A makes no mention of 'reasonable.' You can think it is outdated. I can think the 3A is outdated. Doesn't give me the right to show up, take over your house and use it to quarter soldiers. Have breakfast ready at 0530...

If you want to ammend the Constitutio w/ regards to the 2A, there is a proces. Go for it. Good luck amending the Constitution in a manner that reduces the rights of the citizens.

He is, but:

"I, _____, having been appointed an officer in the Army of the United States, as indicated above in the grade of _____ do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservations or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter; So help me God."

That is the US Army Oath of Office. The Oath of Enlistment is below. Notice that the Oath of Office does not include anything about obeying the orders of the President, or higher ranking officers. The Oath of Enlistment makes it conditional on the UCMJ.

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

Your duty as a soldier is to follow orders from your commander... NOT to interpreted the constitution as you see fit and act accordingly.
