Like why? I could see if a northern state was flying it...

It's a symbol of southern HERITAGE, not hate. Maybe to some retarded white trash fuckers. But it is flying high at the SC capital building, not because of racism, but to remember those that laid down their lives to stand for what they believed, for states rights. NOT only because of slavery.

There were tons of FREE slaves that fought for the south during the civil war, with many African Americans in the Sons of the Confederacy. Look it up if you want.


You're all fucking stupid if you think the flag is a symbol of racism just because the KKK uses it, obviously it's fucking dumb for anyone in the north to fly it. That's a no-brainer.

I fail to see how wanting to be an informed American citizen makes me a fucking loser. Recently, I got asked the question by Austrians/Euros what I think about the Confederate flag. You think a reasonable response to it is "oh, I am not specifically from South Carolina so I can't form an educated opinion about it. Sorry". That's retarded. It's like saying that you in America can't have an opinion about the Nazi party and/or the Holocaust since you aren't a German.

Ideas transcend borders and it's part of the reason why we defend the freedom of speech and expression so that we can have a "marketplace of ideas" in order to make the best judgments that we can.

I am going to respond to your comment on the prior page, so you're right it was to keep the union together, youre correct.

Now do you know why the south was splitting from the union?

Because the policies and practices of the north were a direct threat against the institution of slavery.

“Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery — the greatest material interest of the world,” Mississippi's secession declaration

Albeit the war was over keeping the union together, the reason for the south attempting to leave was directly over slavery, and anyone who disagrees is reading the headlines only without a real understanding of how complex the issue was and its direct correlation with slavery.

This I can all agree with, it should be noted that Lincoln personally thought slavery was wrong, but that he did not find it his duty as president to free the slaves but rather to save the union.

People who believe that it was Lincoln's valiant effort to abolish slavery are indeed wrong.

At the end of the day this is just like any other emotionally dividing story that incessantly captivates the tiny amount of attention we pay to real political issue. This morning I can't see downtown from the other side of the Salt Lake Valley directly because of human produced smog. I had a chat with a homeless vet this morning and I read about a small business owner pinched out of business because of new regulatory health insurance burdens.

It's a flag that comes from a time when absolutely none of us lived through. Our priorities and subjective disposition of what it means is a joke. You're going after the carrot on the stick by even participating in this debate. Our priorities in this country are hashtag fucked.

Really please tell me what it was for? At the end of the day its all comes down to money. The south wasn't industrialize like the north so they had to rely on slave labor for their economy. It was about slavery but at the same time it wasnt about slavory. The flag stands for being able to keep slaves so their economy could flourish.

The prevalence of southern bitterness over the loss of their shitty way of life continues to this day and the rebel flag's presence is a great example. It stands for institutionalized racism on a grand scale. It stands for the governmental subjugation of an entire race. It stands for widespread cruelty and brutal violence on behalf of a "superior" race. I mean what the fuck, man?


Not one halfway-educated normal human being has come up with a single good reason it should be there flying next to the actual pride-inducing American flag. I mean really- It is the flag of the beaten traitor. It's the flag of a failed coup to overthrow the US Government, and it's as close to a terrorist symbol as we even have domestically speaking. Every time you say "The South will rise again" you're literally saying "We're going to attack the government, overthrow the existing system and make these niggers our pets again". Tens of millions of slaves died on slave labor plantations. They were there because of the color of their skin. A confederate flag symbolizes this tragedy to the world.

Yeah 11 million people dying in the span of 5 years is comparable to a 150 year institution that the united states was founded with as a way of getting cheap labor. You know what, more people died in the slave trade than the holocaust, but comparing them just doesn't make sense. They were both terrible and ridiculously inhumane, but thats were the similarities end. I will say it again, I don't think the confederate flag is good and should be flown, but it isn't the same as flying a flag with a swastika on it.

The majority of the holocaust victims starved, were worked, or froze to death. Basically used as animals for slave labor.

Yeah but very rarely can a symbol with such a high profile like the confederate flag be changed. But considering the flag really only became popular as a show of "southern pride" during the civil rights era, it's bullshit that you can just say that it represents southern pride with ignoring the social constructs around the flag and its history.

Yes killing six million people under that symbol, will change what that symbol means. That's a positive symbol that turn to a negative. So the south can come together and save a 6 million peoples lives, under the Confederate flag, and then you can do whatever you want with it. But until then it still used because the South used it during the Civil War, it served no other purpose since.

It's important to keep in mind that he was a republican, so he was standing on a firm anti-slave base to begin with. This also invites the possibility that maybe he just wanted to have the appearance of not being as committed to ending slavery as he really was. Anti-slavery opinions were pretty unpopular in the north, too. At that stage it would have been politically reckless to make the war about slavery, and it would only have caused a greater divide within the union.
Only speculation, obviously - just something to consider

Yeah that's why many republicans are calling for the flag to be taken down. That's why Texas won't issue number plates with the flag on it. That's why the Governors of Maryland, Georgia and North Carolina are all calling to take it down. And that's why Sears, Amazing, Wallmart and Ebay have all stopped selling the flag. And that's why only 9% of America has a positive reaction to the flag, while 30% of America has a negative reaction to when they see it, and the more educated you are, the more negatively you are to the flag.

That last line probably explains why you will defend it so much.
