CoreyTrevorGetting rid of the confederate flag is not going to do anything to solve racism. If anything, it will basically serve as a martyr and strengthen the cause of people who are behind it. The swastika was basically abolished after WW2 even though it was a sign of peace, but that doesn't stop neonazis from existing.
MinggWait, so you're saying people are ignorant for having an opinion and their own interpretation of a flag?
The flag isn't necessarily a staple for slavery. 99% of people who fly it aren't doing so because they are racist or believe in slavery, at least from what I've seen. Maybe that's different in other parts but that's what it's like here. Then again NY is probably a bad example.
Anyways, it doesn't affect me so my opinion doesn't matter. I don't think flying it is usually a good idea but if someone feels strongly about their interpretation of the flag and they want to express that, then so be it. There's really nothing to be done to change their mind. Just gotta go with the flow and respect their beliefs without being judgmental.
That being said, anyone who still stands for slavery and uses the flag to show that is fucked and I disagree with that 100%.
The confederate flag isn't a fucking poem, or a cryptic song lyric, what are you even talking about? I can adopt a swastika as a personal symbol because I really like to solve mazes and to me a swastika resembles the center of a maze, but that doesn't mean that my cute little revisionist "interpretation" of what the symbol represents trumps it's hundreds of years of meaning. Even if a symbol (like a swastika) is initially positive, if it's corrupted to that level and so tightly associated with some horrific thing, it's common sense to abandon that symbol, because DUH.
It's absurd that the US allows states to fly the confederate flag. What other country would allow an open rebellion that claimed the lives of 100,000's to be given some level of legitimacy and the primary symbol to be flown alongside (but it's a lil lower!!) the national flag? It's ridiculous.
And, if all these people claim that it isn't a declaration of racism, and a belief that blacks should be subjected to slavery, cool, then just abandon the flag. It would be a gesture to a group of people that have been treated as inhuman and raped and murdered with impunity that some stupid symbol, whatever it is claimed to mean, isn't nearly as important as healing the divide and moving toward more unity. It sends a message of "fuck you we don't give fuck". And, hey that's fine, but don't act all astonished when black people or other people who see through the transparent bullshit look at you like you're the enemy at worst, a scumbag piece of entitled shit at best.
And, lol at all of the uppermiddleclass white children saying some version of "it's a stupid piece of fabric, and it doesn't personally offend me (no shit), so if you're offended, you're just playing the race card".
Unreal. If that's your argument, "it's just a flag, big deal" that makes the decision to eliminate it even more straight forward.
