Now the second half of the definition may not apply to you, but the first half does. You are ignoring the argument being presented to you. There are certainly worse bigots, but I'd say it still applies to someone in your shoes.

The argument is not about whether or not the flag affects each individual, it's about acknowledging that it affects a very significant amount of other people and that something should be done about it.

Next time, rather than saying you have more important things to worry about, just don't enter the argument. You add nothing worthwhile to the argument and you just make yourself look bad.

MinggYeah I fee you. I don't get offended by it and have no reason to be offended by it so I don't. I can see why others would which is why even if I did believe in those values I would never fly one. People are gonna do what they wanna do though and it's probably a good idea to know where they are coming from instead of accusing them of being racists. 99% of these people are not trying to offend anyone, they're just supporting their beliefs.

MinggDude, I don't know their reasoning, i was never good friends with them. I remember the one kid moved here from Georgia and his family was involved in the war and what not. They had paintings all over and a bunch of antiques as well as a flag flying in their backyard. The other people, I don't know. I never felt the need to come out and ask specifics about why they supported it.

I'm just saying that others have different interpretations of the flag that may not be the way you(and most people) look at it. I don't support it - I would never fly it or use it to represent myself in any way. I don't disagree with you either, I'm just saying not everyone has terrible intentions(racism) when representing the flag.

To fly it from the capitol building, yeah thats pretty fucked up and is a representation of the whole state. Not everyone agrees with it and many people get offended so it definitely shouldn't be flying there.

L_BMy southern family has a rich history in the war. We choose not to be proud of it because we have the nuts to admit that our ancestors made a massive mistake. We're smart enough to understand that the flag was nothing but a war mongering tool, even in it's time in the past, and today serves no purpose. Just because someone WANTS a symbol to mean something other than something racist, it doesnt make it so. It's history represents racism, which is why I really don't mind real racists flying it, at least they actually understand what they're claiming.

But anyone else is simply poorly informed, and I have no patience for the stupid. My family used to fly that flag, I've grown up seeing both sides of it, and the only people who still use it with pride other than actual kkk members are the group of fake redneck/duck dynasty/mudding/lifted truck culture that real country people laugh at.

That group of identity-less pop-country fan's are totally useless and unable to think for themselves. That's what the flag means today. If you fly it, you are pegged by those of us with brains that work as stupid and trend following. The entire state of SC shouldn't be forced to be identified as such.

The flag isn't necessarily a staple for slavery. 99% of people who fly it aren't doing so because they are racist or believe in slavery, at least from what I've seen. Maybe that's different in other parts but that's what it's like here. Then again NY is probably a bad example.

Anyways, it doesn't affect me so my opinion doesn't matter. I don't think flying it is usually a good idea but if someone feels strongly about their interpretation of the flag and they want to express that, then so be it. I can adopt a swastika as a personal symbol because I really like to solve mazes and to me a swastika resembles the center of a maze, but that doesn't mean that my cute little revisionist "interpretation" of what the symbol represents trumps it's hundreds of years of meaning. Even if a symbol (like a swastika) is initially positive, if it's corrupted to that level and so tightly associated with some horrific thing, it's common sense to abandon that symbol, because DUH.

It's absurd that the US allows states to fly the confederate flag. What other country would allow an open rebellion that claimed the lives of 100,000's to be given some level of legitimacy and the primary symbol to be flown alongside (but it's a lil lower!!) the national flag? It's ridiculous.

And, if all these people claim that it isn't a declaration of racism, and a belief that blacks should be subjected to slavery, cool, then just abandon the flag. It would be a gesture to a group of people that have been treated as inhuman and raped and murdered with impunity that some stupid symbol, whatever it is claimed to mean, isn't nearly as important as healing the divide and moving toward more unity.
