Not too sure how it works in the U.S. But in Canada you can obtain an AME license in one of two ways. You can either take a diploma program which is about 2 solid years of schooling, then you're required to get a certain amount of working hours before you can write your final examination and get licensed. The other route is apprenticeship which is full time work under a journeyman, then 2 months of school every year, for 4 years.

I'm in my last year of apprenticeship, and really it's the way to go in my eyes. It's all government paid here, they even make me collect EI while I'm at school. On top of that its nice working 10 months of the year making okay money, and then having time to ski stress free of school.

If the U.S. system for apprentices is any similar then I would try to find some operators that are looking for apprentices, near where you want to ski. From there just ask them for somewhat of an overview on how the school system works, and if it looks like good route to take then it's just a matter of finding a job.
