I've been processing ski porn for the last month without being able to ski. My coping method? Surfing. Now that the waves are flat for the rest of the summer (or so it feels, FML) I've got nothing better to do than watch the Fiji Pro and excessive amounts of surf porn while I wait for the next hurricane. Or winter to come. Either works.
So let's talk surfing!
-What's in your quiver?
-Favorite surf video/segment/movie?
-Where do you surf?
-Wetsuit Gabber
-Favorite Person to watch surf?
-Favorite surf photographer or videographer?
-What are you about - XXL Waves, getting wicked barreled, busting out massive airs and turns, or hanging ten on your longboard?
DrZoidbergSupposed to be decent here on thursday, 59 degrees too and I don't have work till five. Water's cold but what's new?
Anybody use these fancy blackstix ones? From a hydrodynamics standpoint not flat fins should be better. Intended use fits the description, meaning speed generating in smaller surf and general twitchiness. I've worked some extra hours and I feel like buying something expensive and surf related... Plus I actually need fins.
Shit that reminds me I need to replace my winter suit, what would you recommend for cold maine winter h2o? I haven't read around / heard what's hot rn, too busy skiing.

I actually have a body glove 5/4/3. I feel like they don't get as much hype as like ripcurl or whoever else but it's a nice suit. It gets super cold up there right? I'd probably just go for a 5/4 and skip the 3mm part. I know isurus are supposed to be super warm too. But basically I think it comes down to buy nice or buy twice.
And lol I've skied once this season. Apparently I suck at rails or it's hard to do switchups on fat boxes.

I've never surfed Future fins, I don't really know why. But don't just buy something for the sake of buying something. I own FCS nexus's H3 which cost me 160 but I actually prefer the FCS II Performer PC Carbon because they're more playful and allow me to move more on the wave, compared to the Nexus's which I will only put in when it's 6 foot plus perfect glassy conditions. So really see what type of surfing you want out of your fins. More expensive=/=better
any insight on the hypto krypto/ fire wire dominator/ v3 rocket? i'm moving to oregon in the spring and aside from a long board and a beater board i'm looking for somewhat of a 1 board quiver and tied between these 3 boards. sounds like the hypto is the most versatile but i'm looking for the cheapest board that will surf most conditions. thanks!

Yeah in reality this isn't as much of an impulse buy as I made it out to be... Hard to convey sarcasm over the interwebz. I've actually tried the board with several different fin setups and calculated the area for all the combos I've used. So I know what area range I'm looking for and I know I want more spring and speed generation from them, so these seem like the right choice.
I just tested it with f4s (futures small, all around 3 fin set) yesterday, which I knew would be too small but wanted to test for completeness. That was the last and smallest set I wanted to test. Now I feel confident in buying those EAs.
Just got back from a lil 4 day surf trip up the coast. So fucking sick, scored some sick lil waves and surfed with Matt Banting. Working on my air game and it's weak

hypto goes ham
hey guys at the end of my study abroad i want to go surfing, probably in mexico because I have to leave the U.S briefly to swap my visa over to be legal and that I'm already in arizona
So, I'm trying to surf a ton this summer and I have a pro account with Slingshot Sports - they're a kiting brand but they have "surfboards." Could I use one of them as a non-kite surf board?

What surfboards were you looking at??? And where abouts/ type of waves you're planning on surfing and what type of surfing do you wanna do. Powersurfing, airs, little bit of both???
B: I just had such an on point session and it's finally not arctic conditions. I started off on my longboard since it was dead head, but as the tide dropped the wave got steeper and connected from the outside to the inside with a bit of hopping. I don't know if it's because I started on my longboard, but when I took out the 5'4" I was on my game. Nobody out either. People started to show up just as the winds came up and ruined it. So I basically had all the good waves to myself then left.
Yeah I live in South Florida at the moment coming from Colorado. Not that there was any surfing in Colorado, but the surf in South Florida isn't at all like what you see in other places like California or places with really good surf.
Abu-BaghdadiMy DHD switchblade just arrived. Frothing that Darren Hadley shaped it himself, rather than one of this staff.
What size did you get? I was looking at that board the other day and it looks useful. Thinking of shaping myself something similar. Are the concaves deep or did the mellow them out a bunch?

I got the 5.9. And it's got a real mellow double concave with a lil bit of tail kick. Thing fucking rips but anything over four foot and it's so hard to surf it
Just got excepted on National Student Exchange to attend University of Hawaii Manoa for the fall Semester! Plus I'll be back in Utah by the winter semester. Anyone have any recommendations on South shore spots in Honolulu?
Could anyone recommend me where/what to buy for a first surfboard? I have surfed once before, and picked it up pretty easily. Obviously I ski, and also casually longboard.
More info:
Would mostly be surfing Cape Cod
5'6"
145 lbs.
Cheaper is better but it doesn't need to be an awful board by any means

Any preference as to board style, meaning longboards, shortboards or something in between?
For what it's worth, my opinion is as follows: if you want to ride shortboards and you're a reasonably coordinated, reasonably in shape individual, then you're best bet is to grab something similar to a lost puddle jumper. These kinds of boards are short, wide, come with decent volume and are decently easy to surf. They also have a wide range for performance. This design is in a good place as far as its evolution goes right now, if you ask me, and they remain useful for the rest of your surfing life.
My issue with the classic advice of start on a longboard is that I found big boards very difficult to control. I'm 5'5", 120lbs and I started on a 6'4"x21 retro style single fin template, but with a 3 fin setup. Once I was able to reliably catch waves and actually read the wave as I surfed it, I found that board very difficult to control, and it's only 6'4". A lot of new surfers buy something huge, then progress to a point where they want something much shorter.
The counter to my advice is that you won't catch waves on a smaller board. If you learn good positioning, good wave choice, and are coordinated enough and in shape, then you will catch waves. Reading the wave as you surf is the other half of the battle, which only comes with experience.
Anyway, I'm not saying this specific board, but rather this sort of shape. It's stubby and kinda wide, so it's stable but its short length makes it quick to respond. I hate giving out dims to people because it's really hard to judge others skills/preferences unless you surf with them or know them well. I like these sorts of boards to be a bit shorter than myself. You might go a bit taller than yourself. I'm 5'5", 120lbs and I ride a 5'4"x20.5x2.25" most days that probably has about 30 liters of volume. It's a lot of volume for me, but it dominates in small waves, crowds or when I'm in a 5mm wetsuit, which is like +10lbs and -10 fitness/endurance. I'd avoid going really long on these because they get very wide and very high volume, which will hinder aggressive surfers. Likewise, I think there's a limit to the benefits of going super short. I'd love to try a 5'2" or 5' even, but that'd quickly hit it's limits in punchier surf.
Abu-BaghdadiHow do you surf a round tail? I've always hated round tails in small boards. What are also the dimensions?
That is actually a diamond tail.
5'4"x20.5x2.25. Not much of a round tail person either, although I've only had limited experience with them. I like wide tails in general, even on my skinnier boards, which is why I want to try that firewire Stu Kennedy was riding.
gapersarefriendsif you're in cabo and didn't bring a board or anything, and are actually into surfing good waves, hit up the cabo surf hotel during the day
Im bringing my 5'9 lost x lib PJ, im hoping it works on every wave I surf and Im betting it will. My dad and I are renting a car, staying at Villa Del _____, and plan to surf everyday. No idea what break I want to hit the first saturday. We get in about noon.

from looking at that surfboard, you should just hope you won't be surfing in anything over 5 foot. Seriously 36L of volume is so fucking much. How much do you weigh/ height. Plus that surfboard is super flat so good luck with taking real steep drops
Its been a while since my last post. Somehow i surfed a bunch this winter which is sick. I was in Santa Cruz for a week where I picked up a 5'9 CI Joe, its been really fun, but I think i may have bought it a tad to big. I also have spent a bunch of time surfing on Vancouver island, which has been really fun, but as the winter is ending im getting really keen to pickup an old longboard for the small summer days.
Also I think im gonna try and refurbish my old retro fish this summer, I dont have much experience doing any major repair work, so this should be interesting.

Longboards are fun as hell. I started riding one last year and it was a whole new challenge compared to my usual craft. I highly encourage buying one.
What's the condition of the fish? Couple damaged spots or waterlogged to shit?
DrZoidbergWhat's the condition of the fish? Couple damaged spots or waterlogged to shit?
I always tried to stay on top of water getting in, but it was somewhat inevitable. Mostly just dings, but a couple spots of delam. Its been stored in a dry spot for awhile now, so it should be all good now to work on.

Watch out for delam when you're repairing. If its not letting water in or completely compromising the board, don't touch it...sanding out delams can open up a huge can of worms and make a minor project a huge one. Just tread carefully with old and beat fibreglass!

Welp, unlucky for me, I didn't surf anything over 5 foot the entire time. Matter of fact, it was blown out and choppy basically every day. My wave count was embarrassing. Won't be going back to cabo next trip. A 30 year cabo surfing veteran I met at a beach before 9 palms but after Shipwrecks told me that he had never had worse, more blown out conditions on his 2 week trip that overlapped with mine.
Also unlucky, although i suppose more bittersweet, is the fact that United broke my Puddle Jumper on the last leg of the trip from Houston to Bradley. Brand new board. Bought late august 2015. Maybe 10 waves on her (and that includes my trip...) The bittersweet part is that now I can get a board that I can actually fucking duckdive. (I get maybe 1.5 feet down currently) I could have ended up on the rocks at Monuments, but luckily the only bail inside I had was quickly remedied, and no cleanup sets were rolling in.
That is, if united fully reimburses me. They didn't even walk my board out separately. They put it on the goddamn carousel. Luckily they seem to have a comprehensive policy for damaged luggage.

jesus isn't that the lib tech collab? you can run those over with cars i thought, did they try that with the plane?
Interesting to see pink foam in there too. XPS foam, perhaps? Maybe they tested its resistance to jet engines?
Been kinda chunky but big and fun here in NJ. Honestly light onshore winds and higher tides have ended up being a lot more fun that I'd expect. The drop is crazy and then it kinda just rolls through since its got some size to it. Really getting the hang of backside fin release turns.
