First car; suggestions?!

I'm 17, and have been saving up for a car. I would like something nice, my cap is like $15,000 and looking for a car with around 70,000 miles if not lower. Two cars in mind...

Used 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX hatch, 30,000 miles, around the &15,000 range(don't remember exactly)
Fully loaded, leather seats, sunroof, nav.
Or

Used 2007 BMW 335ix, (awd obviously) 4 door, around 70,000 miles, and right at $15,000. Nice car but no nav.

Which is a better choice ?

Because there's no point in buying a good car. Your chances are much higher of getting in a car accident from 17-24 and unless you can afford good insurance which most young adults can't, you're going to ride off your car and waste 15k on a car that lasts you like 4 years. Hence why I said unless you're responsible and a good driver. Use your head dumb cunt

You're actually retarded. He's 17 and obviously not paying for his own insurance. Also $15k is really good for a car with low miles like what he is looking at. Also the whole 17-24 statistic doesn't mean he is going to crash his car.

You know what happened when I was 17 in a brand new 335ix? I hit 130mph and blew the fuel pump.just go with a non turbo impreza wagon. I went fast enough with mine at 17 to have fun but walk away alive with some speeding tickets and non affordable auto insurance that I really only pay when I do massive road trips and at registration time.

p.s been driving for 4 or 5 years, only a very very minor incident (love bumping a pillar while reversing out of a park - cant even see damage). Also haven't been pulled over by a cop lol, only RBTd

Dont go bmw, for a teen the insurance would be high Id imagine and maintenance is a bitch. If you really want a wrx Id say buy a model a few years older so you can have spare cash. Personally with $15k Id buy a used evo 8 or 9, but thats me.

Premium fuel for the WRX is fukkin expensive.

I think the CRV/RAV4 suggestion is a good one. Cheap on gas, cheap to insure, cheap maintenance. Cheap tires too.

Agreed. To OP, Keep it under 10k and get decent condition, reliable and fuel efficient car. Your car is going to get dinged up. Dumbasses are going to fling their doors open into yours in parking lots (assuming your going to drive it to high school). Your friends are going to spill shit or puke in it.

Think about the fuel costs, replacement part costs and the average reliable lifespan of the model your looking at.

I have a 2001 crv

Pros:
Reliable
I get about 300 miles on the 15.3 gallon tank with mostly normal driving to the store or school and occasional highway driving.
With snow tires it would kill in the winter but I almost crashed a lot since I had all seasons.
Practical

Cons:
4wd system is very fwd biased (prefer rwd biased)
Hate the 4 speed auto, get a manual
Seats arent comfortable (leather)


Other than that its not bad for day to day driving, If I had your budget and wanted something like a wrx, get an impreza or legacy outback. Dont blow your whole budget on just the car, save a couple grand.

I'd avoid the BMW, sure they're fun to drive but the maintenance cost will eat you alive. VW, Volvo, Subaru are all solid choices. Where do you live? What type of driving do you do? Do you plan on taking it to college with you?

Since you are 17 and still have a ways until you actually buy this car, I assume that you have already developed you driving skills to the point that you wont crash your baby. Don't hold back, buy the car that you really want. This will ensure that you will actually give a shit when it comes to maintenance.

You could look into an Audi Allroad, they started making them in 2001 I think, around 2005 they started making them with a 4.2 v8 or 2.7 v6 turbocharged, they are all wheel drive and have some cool gadgets you could get a 2001 $5k, which would be a good cheap (for you, the car I have is worth $1k) first car, plus they're fast, they are most commonly seen with an automatic tran if thats a problem for you. Pretty much Audis version of WRX.

I would not suggest this car IMHO. My friends literally fell apart. It was a quick and decent looking car, but damn it had the durability of an egg.

The mechanics were alright. Basic engine function worked well haha. But the interior just fell apart. Cup holders broke, door handles came off, ac/volume knobs broke. Both of his mirrors fell off while just sitting in a parking lot.

He bought it used though, so maybe the guy before him just patched it up and made it look pretty?

I'd say a Subaru or a Jeep.. I have a Jeep Patriot and its perfect for road trips because it is an suv but I get up to 30 mpg which is insane for any suv let alone a jeep. Also, it is pretty safe. It is a pretty practical car and you can always make it look more bad ass. I've blacked out my grill and all of the emblems and am getting black rims :)

NOT this. Ugh. I just finished owning one for a year. Beautiful car, awesome to drive, got lots of attention, but a huge mistake. I was so happy the day I sold it; the repairs are endless and costly. The car always ran, but always needed some little thing done to it. And this was on a mint condition car with 55000 miles on it, not a beat up high-mileage junker. I would only own one again if it was under warranty.

For 15k you could easily get an mk4 r32. AWD, 240hp, hot hatch, better looking than those ugly ass wrx's, better sounding than those ugly ass wrx's, better interior, same gas mileage as wrx, 12 years "unlimited" paint warranty (for rust, something subaru doesn't have). Plus lets be honest, mk4 r32's are one of the coolest, best cars VW ever made.

Do wahtever you want OP..but keep in mind a lot of people were in your place once and we have gained some wisdom over the years.

Seriously...nothing wrong wtih the two cars you picked out but take a good hard look at them. Who really cares how "cool" your car is or what other people think about them. The WRX is one of the higest cost cars to insure for your age group. 15K isn't a lot of money for a car...would you rather get some decent cheap reliable economy car that will have little to no miles on it for 15k that will last you throughout college, and probably for a number of years after that....or do you want to be that kid who spends his entire fucking bank account to drive a car that is "cool" just so other people approve of your car.

If I was you...Id look into a nice midsize SUV with low mileage. The AWD will come in handy and the extra room will be well worth it. I wouldnt drive a WRX because theyre insanely expensive to insure. BMW is ok...never was a huge fan of them but 70k is a lot of miles and not to long you will need to do timing belt, etc which is very costly on a bmw.

Better yet he might as well start a savings account and have his employer match his monthly contribution (supposing he has a job, which anyone trying to buy the cars he wants better have). Of course he'd probably need full time status to acquire that benefit but its an even easier way to make a large chunk of money over your lifetime. 4k + employer matching a year turns into close to 2 million in 30 years with compounding interest.

THIS! Nowadays you can find a MK5 GTI for like $10k with close to 100k miles. They last really long from what I hear and I wish I had a VDub.

The great thing about those cars is that they're inexpensive to fix. My dad had an '01 CRV that lasted him close to 300k miles within a range of 10 years. He put on so many miles on it due to driving from NY to VT for work, it was a great car. The first and second gen CRV's are the best IMO, and they're really safe, too, and I grew up around those cars because my parents were proud owners of an '01 and an '03 CRV.

In all seriousness, the newer civics are hard for people to turn them into ricers. I guess Honda wanted to eliminate the ricer stereotype in the newer generations (8th gen and newer). That being said, OP, you can get a newer Civic Si with some ultra high performance all-season tires with a budget like that. The only downside is that the shift boot in the newer Si's are mad narrow for a 6-speed. Also get a sedan if you decide to get an Si.

I'm not saying all VWs are unreliable, what I'm saying is that its a well known fact that they throw a shit ton of CELs, most of which are basically nothing and are easy to wipe.

At this point I figured everyone just knew that VW was synonymous with CEL.

It's awesome that you haven't thrown a CEL yet, but literally everyone I know who owns / has owned a VW (not all German cars, mind you) has had problems with check engine lights
