How do I get a credit card?

I don't really want one, just going to use it for gas and online tickets and shit. Figured I'd establish credit and whatever.

Anyway nobody wants to give me a card. I understand, I don't have credit but jesus, even if I had a horrific score I could get a stack of cards.

They asked me at the store and the bank if I wanted one over the winter. Filled everything out and got the big old denial cause I gotst no credits.

Only real reason I want one is for rental cars, and if I buy a house ever and need a loan.

I could be wrong because I don't have a credit card but my buddy had your same difficulty and he got his credit card by giving his bank his monthly rent payment history, he was never late and always paid in full and they used that as a vouch to get him his credit card, then he bought a laptop with the card and paid it off in a few months and now he has a good credit score, bang bang.

There are prepaid credit cards that help build credit. Maybe check those out. Otherwise there is the option of co-signing but I wouldn't recommend doing that at all.

Cash is king


Not really though. I mean I think the credit card world and the way many people use them is fucking stupid but I just want to be able to rent a car and establish credit for a future loan if needed and stuff. Also if I have a rewards card use it sometimes and get some stuff.

Ive used cash only for years at a time. I'm good at budgeting and living cheap. I'm not going to go YOLO and buy a bunch of stupid stuff. Would probably be more like hmm, I'm going to buy this, I guess I'll use the credit card instead of the debit kinda thing.

But yeah have had a lot of friends do stupid shit with credit cards. My parents weren't great with them either. Actually got a couple when I was 18 in the mail(didn't apply just got em) but was turned off by them at the time. For the best anyway because there were times where I was in a bad spot but would pull some poverty magic out and make it through, instead of having a card to fall back on. A lot more stable now.

How old were you? I'm 26 now, might have been 25 still on one of the rejections. Just curious cause I'm thinking my age and not using one is what's hurting me. Like they're being dicks because I didn't go into dead when I was 18 on their cards or something.

I was still pretty late to the credit card game, probably 23 or 24

If I were you I would get one thats linked to a grocery store. You can rack up points and then get free grocerys

i was in the same boat a few years ago. Ended up getting a card with a 39$/year fee. Allowed me to build credit and whatnot

Actually got denied by city market this winter. They were like "Would you like to apply for our rewards card" and I was like fuck yeah I would. But no go.

I know it's lame, and maybe you're too old but I got one when I was young with a parent co-signing, and then as I got older I just took it over and that was that. I mean if nothing else works to prove you're responsible to them, it might be an option.

Check this link, try the "easier to apply for" cards. The Quicksilver card with the annual fee might work or the secured Mastercard.

That being said, get a credit card with your bank. Build your credit for a year or two and get a rewards card of some kind and welcome to the wonderful world of credit.

I might try to get one through bank of america. Don't think it requires credit. Need a deposit which is fine. Looking at some other options though. I hate the idea of a hear long deposit. I have money to swing it but I like to be able to have all my money if I wanted it. I guess technically in that regard I can charge whatever at those times if I'm spending a bunch and then pay it all right off but still.

Credit is fucking dumb lol. I just want the card and a number, I don't even want to use the stupid thing. If my credit was horrific it'd be better than not having credit and that baffles me. How is shit credit better than no credit?

Yeah now I do. Kind of off an on over the years but keeping one now for intraweb purchases. The last 3 or 4 years I've had one almost the whole time other than maybe one 6 month stretch.

I gotta go to the bank tomorrow to figure out some shit with my card anyway so might ask if they have a secured card.

It's only easy to get a credit card when you already have things like student loans.

Join creditkarma.com they will show you your credit score or lack there of and show you the credit cards you are most likely to qualify for based on your history. It will likely only be a $300 or $500 limit with a high interest rate, but I'm sure there is something.

You may have actually hurt yourself by applying for cards at other establishments though. Bank credit cards are pretty difficult to get so you immediately had a negative inquiry if you applied. Then if you have applied for more, you may have a few nicks to your score with out having any credit.
