Computer Help! (buying)

Alright so unfortunately the screen on my HP DV7 I got back in 2010 just died on me. (screen shot out)

So I'm in the market for a new computer. I'd like to keep it under $1000. The DV7 I got on sale for under $400 bucks and I loved that up until now, but I'm not sure I"ll be able to get the same value I did then...

I want something about 15", that is super durable and just made to run well.

So what are some suggestions? I would probably prefer to stay with PC, I don't really like Windows 8 but I guess you can run it mostly like windows 7 now so that would be fine I'm sure.

What about like the surface things? Are they any good? Never really been a fan of tablets but if people have really good experience with some of those new tablet quasi laptop type things let me know.

I like the surface but you definitely need to get a different keyboard for it. Like an actual keyboard instead of that flimsy thing.

I would rather have a tablet and have it's sole purpose be a tablet instead of a tablet that is more like a laptop.

what are you going to be primarily going to be using the PC for?

Also I know the feeling on getting a decent computer for cheap. The last laptop I bought was a sony vaio that was only about 2-3 months old and got it for $400 because the person wanted a mac instead.

You can find some good deals if you just constantly check those local buy and sell websites. Sometimes people are willing to sell stuff for super cheap.

Internet, lots of movie/music playing (so nice speakers would be nice actually), maybe some LOL, No editing or anything like that.

Also on the surface part I used to use a surface for the shop I work at for business. We had it hooked up to a monitor and an actual keyboard & mouse. They are pretty awesome, but not really good as a laptop. The nice thing is that the Surface pro 2 runs really well and with a USB hub you can plug in a keyboard and mouse. If you have a spare monitor kicking around or an HDMI TV you can plug it into that as well. They are pretty nice for a tablet and can handle a lot. I've had photoshop running on it and a bunch of other things and it was running pretty decent actually. Check out some performance tests on the Surface 3 apparently it can play Titanfall so I mean for a tablet it's pretty decent. I dunno if that will make the decision harder or easier.

If you're not going to be using the computer for anything too extensive you should be able to find a decent one for what you want for a fairly cheap price.

another +1 for this post.

IMO windows laptops are garbage and its worth it to spend $1500 on a mac book or something but I understand you want to keep costs down.

If you were interested in a macbook air, check out some of these, great deals for a very solid computer. Ive owned a macbook air for 2 years now and it does everything I need, i even edit on my air.

Only issue really is the smaller screen (nbd, you can buy a 27" monitor for like $200 or 23" monitor for $100 if it really matters) and the hard drive size (see that the windows laptop has a spinning 1tb hard drive while the air has a 128gb SSD). Definitely can work around and get a cheap apple laptop if you really wanted.

i'd recommend smaller than the 17" he linked you above if you want it to be at all portable. 17" sucks for throwing in a bag. but lenovo makes good stuff

Lenovo's stuff is really well built. I have a Flex 2 which is good for everyday stuff. I would recommend the Thinkpad though if you want more performance.

agreed. windows laptops may have the better internal components, but the external stuff like keyboard, case, and trackpad on a macbook are just lightyears ahead of windows stuff right now

Get that Lenovo the other guy posted. You don't need a mac for what you are doing, don't even try to convince yourself you need one because you don't. You will get so much more computing power out of the Lenovo than a macbook air. I am not an apple hater either, I have a 13 inch macbook pro and I love it, but I need it for developing android and iOS apps and a lot of computer graphics stuff.

I have also owned 2 Lenovo laptops and they still run 5 years later with nothing wrong.

yea I was iffy on this. But I assume I can turn it off if it's getting really annoying and it will just be a normal laptop.
