Bernie introduced a bill today to make all college "free" by introducing a transfer tax on large amounts of stock and money transfers by speculators on wall street. Under his plan the federal government would cover 67% (47 billion) and the remaining 33% ( 23 billion) would be covered by the states.

Mark my words, THIS BILL WILL RUIN AMERICA!!!!

BERNIE 2016!!!!! honestly fuck all who think this is bad. look at the UK or Norway, they're doing it, and its not every college that will become free its the state run colleges that will, the ones that are private will remain the way they are. even if we have to pay slightly more in taxes, honestly the socio-economic return in creating free tuition will outweigh the costs. so such it hilary

Nothing's free. Your, or most likely your parents', taxes already go in part towards secondary level education. Being against subsidised tertiary education on the grounds of taxes is illogical and narrow-minded.

just like i get money taken out of my paycheck to go to social security??? By the time I am old enough to receive benefits, I wont be receiving those benefits due to the fact that the system is broken. and don't worry, i'd rather have my tax money going to someone who wants for something more important than repaving a road for the fifth time in two years.

nothing is free. This would only further effect the lower and middle class - the people who are already struggling to pay for college.

I want to hold a sign that says that at rallies because Bernie has 10s of thousands of privileged college kids playing the victim. There are problems like starving kids, homeless people, the failed drug war, private prisons, the fucking wars we're in etc and you have 1000s of privileged kids crying about free college. It is comical.

How exactly does "free" state college further affect the low and middle class? It's not like their taxes will go up ten fold. Bernie wants to impose a tax on wall street trades.

I am just pointing out the fact that he campaigns on adding all of this free shit without realizing nothing is free. Tax money will be effected one way or another if they keep adding government policies. And for the most, college kids are privileged. So when you see rich kids campaigning for Sanders I find it ironic because lots of them already have everything. So they dwell on issues like free college because that is how they can play the victim. You don't see as many college kids screaming about ending war because it doesn't affect them...

I am generalizing because I hear people mentioning universal health care, free college, more aid here there, ban guns etc. A bunch of policies that sound ideal as fuck but not easily feasible. Free in terms of new policies usually means robbing from peter to pay paul

I graduated from a community college myself. I admit I am generalizing and talking politics hurts my brain. I am just basing my dumb generalizations off the kids from universities believing in the need for free college when they chose to go to a expensive private institution.

I just want to say that adding more government policies is rarely ever going to fix the problems in America. And it is definitely not going to fix the debt problem.

that is an interesting take on it.. I have found and also read that there is not a lack of jobs but a lack of qualified people to fill the jobs. A great example is where I work. We have had a Network Engineer position open since March and have not filled it yet. We barely even get any resumes in.

Do you not think that creating affordable/free college would allow for more people to have the opportunity to gain the necessary experience for said jobs? Many brilliant lower/middle class people forgo college becase they are afraid of the incurred debt. If the tuition were paid through taxes, sure, you'd pay a little more on your taxes, but you'd also be helping produce a better work force and therefore a better economy. The best way to get rid of debt is to spend a few billion less on "defence" and add a few billion to education. Look at Germany, they have free education, they even offer free graduate school to foreigners, and they have the largest economy in Europe and the 4th largest GDP in the world.


What's the stat that gets thrown around all the time? Every dollar spent on education today puts 6 dollars back into the economy in the long term.

Lets cut all college sports that dont make money! Use that money towards scholarships. No one gives a fuck about womens sports, or tennis, or golf, or swimming, or, frankly, anything other than top football and basketball programs.

I do not know anybody who was college ready who did not go to college because it was expensive. I do know poor people who went though on the government's dime and got degrees. They already have assistance programs. I also know people who had assistance and still managed to fail out. I say not everybody needs to go because with all of this talk about college being necessary, trade jobs get looked over. For some folks, going straight to work after high school to learn a trade is more beneficial than spending 30k on a 2-year trade school degree.

I agree, so respectively, I think you're missing the point. The point is to create the opportunity for anybody to attend college if they should choose to do so. If not, the opportunity is always there. The "assistance programs" you mention are simply loans, grants and scholarships which does not create opportunity for EVERYONE. Just those who are eligible for them.

What you seem to be forgetting is that pretty much every other country that subsidizes higher education has some form of restricting how many degrees/ students it takes in. Forcing people to look at other options. In Australia you need certain marks to get into uni (marks are also scaled from a standard test so the school can't just give you 100% and say you're really smart). Just because you're super rich doesn't mean you can automatically buy your way into an engineering degree. Your level of intelligence determines what degree you do.

(i.e. sweden) not going to defend some of the GOP's ridiculous stances on social issues, but to say that all republicans are stupid is just a ridiculous generalization.

No but there is a direct correlation with the higher level of someone's intelligence the more likely they are to be democrat. Hence why republican states don't invest as much in education.
