What is the best way to load a canoe on a roof rack by myself?

Anyone have experience loading a canoe on a car rack solo? I have a 14 1/2 foot canoe. It is not all that heavy but quite awkward to lift. I have a forester and a pick up with a canopy. Both have basic roof racks. What is the best way to load and unload my canoe by myself?

pick it up and place it on the roof

Doesnt it have the bars going across it? Just grab those and lift

^ So far I have tried all of the suggestions above. Still looking for a way to make it less frustrating. My canoe is quite wide and instead of cross bars it has these molded seat/compartment things. It is not set up for an overhead portage like some river canoes.

just put the nose up on top first and and then swing the back end up? idk might scuff up your car though

If you tried my suggestion and failed you need to go back to school son. It's all in the flick and make sure you enunciate properly.

Fred_Bearjust put the nose up on top first and and then swing the back end up? idk might scuff up your car though


I'm thinking this method might work on the Forester. Maybe I can put a towel between the cross bars and sit the nose on it and then lever it up.

Water noodles
Cut slit to center hole lengthwise
Put over gunwales
Won't scratch anything
