OregonDead^ So far I have tried all of the suggestions above. Still looking for a way to make it less frustrating. My canoe is quite wide and instead of cross bars it has these molded seat/compartment things. It is not set up for an overhead portage like some river canoes.

Fred_Bearjust put the nose up on top first and and then swing the back end up? idk might scuff up your car though
OregonDeadI'm thinking this method might work on the Forester. Maybe I can put a towel between the cross bars and sit the nose on it and then lever it up.
