Autonomous Cars Reshaping Our Future

I want to see how you guys and gals reacted to the article. The most curious sections are "The Future" paragraph and the section where the author talks about major car mfg companies going bankrupt. I honestly do not think that the automobile and public transport mfg machines across the globe will shut down, at least at first. There are so many fucking people who make a living off of cars and the aftermarket parts industries that it would take much, much longer than a couple decades for them to shut down.

Personally, I love driving. I own a beautifully clean '87 Accord Lxi. It's a manual and an absolute blast to drive (even though it's a little 4 banger), with a 1" drop on Bilsteins and H&R lowering springs. It's a manual, as all of my cars have been. I don't think, even if it was financially cheaper in the long run, that I would convert over to self-driving cars. I'm perfectly capable of driving and doing it well. I enjoy the experience of getting from A to B.

What do you think about this future the author talks about? Would you get a self-driving car? Why?

Yeeeaaaahhhhhh no. Autonomous cars will definitely be on the roads in large numbers by 2030 but they will still be the minority. I see a future in semi-autonomous cars and fully autonomous public transportation and industrial vehicles. Maybe this article will be realistic 70-80 years, but not 15.

I would have one, and then a regular car too. With a self driver I could get off work at 430 in tahoe, have the car ready push a button and chill, watch a movie,read ,sleep and wake up in the parking lot in park City to shred all weekend then sleep all the way home.

How would autonomous cars make ethical decisions? Would we/should we program them to take the most utilitarian route? If there are people walking on either side of side of a one way street and bugged car is headed towards you, what should your car be programmed to do (assuming there is not enough time to stop)?

There's definitely a correlation between how much people rely on technology and how mother fucking god damn stupid they are.

I'm gonna move underground and hide in my old school existence in the mountains somewhere while the rest of the world destroys itself.

I always thought those guys that move into the boonies and live off the land were crazy, but more shit keeps happening, and the most same they seem.

I fully support autonomous cars. Reason? Because I don't see everyone using them any time soon. That being said, here's my proposal:

Once autonomous cars are a standard, make the restriction for obtaining a driver's license much more difficult. Then anyone who can't pass the rigorous test will only be allowed to use autonomous cars. Anyone who passed has the option to drive themselves instead. Cars should also disable manual drive if the driver has consumed any drugs or alcohol.

The roads will be exponentially safer and people who like to drive (and are good enough) will still be able to do so.
