KravtZI usually like your posts they are quite good....this just doesn't make sense to me.
Democratic socialism, while not communist socialism..is still socialism. Yes we all pay for roads, defense, etc. That is just normal taxes. If you go read the democratic socialist official website...its quite clear they want to take from the rich and give to the poor. Tax the hell out of corporations, punish wall street. Basically punish anyone who is successful. If you start a business from scratch and now it makes 100M a year and you take it public...why should you be punished? You created thousands of jobs, took the risk, and are successful. The bottom line is people are looking for a free handout. His plan will cost $18 Trillion. Its insane to think this younger generation is so supportive of a socialist. I'm sure people like average joe schmoe would love Bernie. They don't actually know what Wall Street does and is influenced heavily by media bias, lies and corruption. TAKE DOWN THE MAN because I only make 50k a year yet some wall street guy makes 500k a year.
You are a successful guy. I'm sure you don't want your income taxed even more to support others who aren't as successful.
I paid 100% for my own college education. If Bernie was elected...I would get taxed MORE to help pay other peoples tuition. That isn't right. I made sacrifice to pay it off and now am being punished again because others aren't smart or willing to do what it takes.
The entire system is screwed up no doubt...but Bernie is certainly not the answer.
Well, let's break it down then. I live in a democratic socialist country, Austria. We have high taxes yes. But the government also believes that it its duty to not merely protect its citizens but to promote their well being. As such, basic healthcare is basically free (there are some small costs associated with it but it is so much more incredibly cheap compared to what I paid in the states) and so is university. There is more help built into the system to get people to the next level, rather than paint the dream in front of them yet not provide them with the skills to get there.
Another note on free university. Because it is free, it means that you can't buy your way in. You need to test in (test scores, writing samples, etc etc) and this makes it very difficult to get it- no freeloader could ever do it. Only the best students get in and this in turn causes the secondary education levels to be WAY more prepared and thorough in educating their students. If free public university is done anything like what is done here in Austria, the students will be better off for it and a more educated public is definitely a good thing.
What is happening in Austria, Germany, France etc is far from Marxism. Leaders are democratically elected and the taxes are put to more good use to help make its citizens live better lives. Business are private and any citizen can start any business they want- the government is not telling people what business they can and can't open. It's a regulated capitalist economy, similar to what currently exists in America. Instead of spending the majority of their tax revenue on their military, they put it to different use.
Every legitimate economist (even supply side economists like Art Laffer) will argue that the current distribution of wealth in this country is a problem and it will lead to an economic crisis. When the top 400 wealthiest people in America possess more wealth than the bottom 150 million combined
and the percentage of wealth that the 400 own is growing (doubled actually since 1980) while the wealth of the median and lower income families is declining at about 8%, it will lead to economic turmoil. It's not jealousy that motivates Bernie to attack Wall Street, but simple economics.
