Overpopulation

The number is creeping closer to 1billion undernourished people globally. Along with environmental issues, what does our population look like in the future? At our rate of growth (different organization calculate differently) we may reach 9 billion by 2050. What does that mean for 1.Earth 2.Economics 3. People? Will the earth naturally level itself off by created a global scale disaster?

Despite our ability to transcend natural selection the earth still has a carrying capacity for humans. My concern is that we might push into that capacity so rapidly that we will be decimated by some large scale crisis, although we're already headed towards that as we destroy the environment. We'll probably experience a massive sea level rise which will cause coastal deaths and inland relocations that will lead to overcrowding which will in turn cause a scarcity of resources and rapid spread of disease. But by all means, keep having kids and leaving your AC unit running while you're at work, after all global warming wasn't caused by humans, just ask the really rich people since they know everything

Technology allows us to increase the carrying capacity (the amount of organisms the ecosystem can sustainably have) of our planet but with exponential growth, which is what we are currently showing, we will outpace the growth of technology. As for food, food growth is linear meaning that it will also not keep up with the growing population rate.
When populations of animals in a a defined area hit their carrying capacity they often exceed it. This creates an unsustainable population with the overshoot. This then leads to a massive die off and an undershoot of the carrying capacity. This cycle continues with massive growths and die offs. Since we have intelligence unlike other species under which this is observed these massive die offs and growths will not be too dramatic.
OR we invest in spacex and virgin galactic and find ourselves a new planet till we face this issue again on that planet. But that could not happen depending if you are a believer in the Fermi Paradox. Look it up, its interesting.

Over population will ease in around 20 years. Much of Europe, China and Japan people over the age of 65 make up 20% of the population. Also the global total fertility rate and over the last 40 years families have gotten smaller. According to UN data the worlds population will peak in 20 or so years then fall again.

Even if over population was a much larger problem than it actually is stop fucking saying there's enough resources for everyone. Earth has already used two thirds of it's non renewable energy such as coal. Additionally over demand from an increased population will lead to inflation on food prices. Unless everyone grows their own crops prices will increase.

The combination of climate change and humans surpassing the carrying capacity will lead to mass starvation due to bad crops/lack of crops, draught, flooding, natural disasters, wars, energy crisis, extinction of other species, and eventually the decimation of the human race if we continue in the direction we are headed.

yea because if we all worked together! we can solve this thing! No stfu there has to be incentive to shut your ac off before the population will do it. You can only expect so much from a rational human being, and giving up basic pleasures is not something anybody will ever do for the sake of humanity. Overpopulation is not so much an issue because global fertility rates are decreasing. Japan even is beginning to suffer major economic burdens because of the de extremely low fertility rates at a non replacement level causing the underpopulated youth to have to pay higher taxes for the welfare of the overpopulated seniors.

Our earth is fucked because the ocean currents have already stopped moving. britain is going to go into an ice age, the northeast is going to become colder and california is going to become hotter. Not to mention the ice caps will melt.

Co2 is our biggest issue right now by far. Literally humans have thrown off the balance that the earth was at (as niel degrasse tyson explains this is a perfect equilibrium between venus (too much atmosphere of co2 making it cloudy and extremely stormy and hot) and mars (absolutely no atmosphere is a barren wasteland). We are moving toward the venus side of the spectrum, trapping heat in with a thicker atmosphere created by pollution directly. Plants have no effect on the rate which we are spewing atmosphere. In addition there is no way to efficiently do artificial photosynthesis. Essentially our planet is becoming venus right now. If we tip the scales too much, it could be irreversible. But i have hope.

Somebody said above me that the population is increasing exponentially. My friend, technology increases exponentially. We really have nothing to worry about in this regard. Think about the last ten years all of the techological breakthroughs... now think of the last 50 years. We are speeding up. I have no doubt all this shit will be reversed soon enough. Nobody worry. Keep doing your thing.

I have to admit I sort of agree with the guy typing in all caps here. The richest 20% of the world uses about 85% of its resources. We already produce enough food on the planet to feed about 15 billion. The problem isn't overpopulation, it's overconsumption and terrible resource distribution. That being said, overpopulation in certain regions does create terrible resource strains and human rights issues in those particular regions, but for those of us in the fist world, it's not the billions of people in poor countries causing our environmental problems but our own failure to not fucking use up and destroy every natural resource we come across.

There should be a limit on the amount of kids that a couple can have. 4 tops. I don't see how that would be a problem. I have already decided to not have kids.

Actually I don't think the population situation is as bad as a lot of people make out. Fertility rates have been declining towards the replacement rate as countries economies grow. US population growth has been flattening out as have many first world countries. I think global warming is a far bigger issue and one that is likely to cause large issues with population levels.

if youre a minority you get more scholarships for college, hell sometimes its even completely free. more and more workplaces are implementing diversity initiatives where underrepresented groups will get hired over your stereotypical white male. The highschool i went to bused kids in from the inner city to try and get them a better education. The opportunities are more and more prevalent, they just have to be seized. it is not nearly as bad as it was even just a few years ago.

I acknowledge that white males have an advantage. im just saying that that advantage is lessening

Ill just use 1 example. growing up poor academics is neither encouraged or supported. going to college is seen as something that is unreachable, and from a very young age is seen as not worthwhile. Coming from a background like yours, academics are encouraged and supported, and college is seen as something very possible and something to strive for.

This is but one of many, many sociological advantages that soemone from your background has.

As far as overpopulation, it fucking pisses me off when people have a ton of kids. The fact that those ignorant fucks got a tlc show instead of a punch in the face for having 19 kids is insane.

It's irresponsible to the world. At that point it's irresponsible to the kids. Imagine being the 8th child out of 19. I'm sure they'll get so much quality time with their shitty parents. Then again maybe it's for the best because their parents should be beaten.

Be fruitful and populate the earth is literally still being taught in churches. This isn't fucking 500 AD or something, this is 2015. Stop having so many fucking kids. I really don't think people should have more than 2 kids. Not really hating on having 3 but you gotta draw the line somewhere.

We're fucking up our planet to try and sustain a bunch of morons that shouldn't even be here. I'm not going to have kids so at least I'm not contributing. Not saying people shouldn't have kids just be responsible.

Humans are like a fucking plague to the earth. Hell even to the other people. Think about how much better off the world would be if the population was going down instead of up.

WE DONT NEED ANYMORE PEOPLE. WRAP YOUR FUCKING DICK UP, DONT HAVE SEX, TAKE THE PILL, BUY A FUCKING COAT HANGER, DO SOMETHING.

I don't see why it's socially acceptable. Also the WORST is when it's people having 4 or 5 kids(even more) living in situations where they can't sustain them. The kids living in shitty conditions, the family living off welfare, etc. That's another whole drain on the world.




Then again, people are more ignorant than ever these days, less likely to take any responsibility for their actions, and the world is more fucked than ever.

Seems like things wouldn't be that hard to fix but you add the human element and it becomes impossible. Thank you stupid people for ruining the earth.

So you are making the assumption that all poor people are not white? Do you think that all white people in America are not poor?

And but being poor does not mean you don't encourage or support education. I know people who came from a low income household, but their parents said education is important, they made sacrifices and did things to make sure their kids knew education was the number one priority. Do you know where those people are? Not low income, that is for sure. The importance of education is not just tossed aside because you are poor.

I'm tired of hearing that fucking excuse. America is great because it gives people an opportunity to get out of a lower socioeconomic status and into a better one. That opportunity isn't just handed to you, you have to work for it.

Where do you get the idea that all poor families discourage good grades? Thats the stupidest thing ive ever heard. I knew kids that grew up with next to nothing and their parents were the hardest on them about grades because they wanted them to have a better life than they could provide for them.


Hahaha you dont know me at all. The only time I can really buy something expensive is if I save up and cut out other things. All my ski gear is bought on sale or with discounts from friends. My bank account is close to zero more often than not.

Anyways im done with this thread, this is way far off topic. Only reason I even responded is I was a little drunk last night

Not all of us can ski because of disposable incomes. I work three jobs, and I've been skiing on my brothers' old skis for years. Sure, we live in an amazing town, but that doesn't mean we're rich. We buy our cars, our clothes, our gas and our food. Some of us aren't entitled people, but hard workers instead.

It kills me. To en extent it's become a "Our religion is dying(thankfully) so lets have a shit ton of kids and indoctrinate them all with bullshit while they're too young to think for themselves in hopes that it will stick with most of them and they will do the same".

I think it's funny that people act like gay people are killing the earth. Anyone that isn't pumping out babies at this point is a plus imo.

Would be epic if we could get to a point in the next 10 years or so where we start going down. We'll probably have added another 25% by then though.

The only thing that will stop us is some fucked up gnarly epidemic to kill off a bunch of us. Would suck but it would probably be good for the earth and even the human species in the long run.

There should be a march where everyone walks with a coathanger to remind people not to be so ignorant and or selfish.

God its so true its sad. I have an uncle whos a mormon bishop and he essentially said not having kids is selfish... That there are spirits on the otherside waiting to come to earth and that by not having children youre essentially trapping them there and that procreation is the #1 puropose of life (which is true in a sense but definitly not in his sense totally FUCKED).

Also he said that the declining birthrate in america is the reason america is essentially going to shit... that were losing sight of our purpose and becoming lazy. and that other cultures such as hindus or mexicans have a really high birth rate and are more or less going to invade and take over america... Its so twisted its sad.. Its a really common belief among mormons.

tl;dr mormons are racist fucks who are ironically selfish while condemning everyone else of selfishness...

Man, that's fucking mind blowingly ridiculous. I kind of wish we could swap family for a holiday. Generally we just talk about how the liberals are ruining america, and how black and gay people are terrible people. Would be nice to have a change of topic to argue about.

The rate we've increased is insane. There is nothing to be gained by having more people. Less food, less space, more pollution, potential drain on the txpayers, etc. I'd love if some of the space we still haven't marred would be left alone but we'll probably bull doze any nice mountains so we can build huge shitty building to house all the shitty people.

People who think that it's cool to have a shit ton of kids should be sent to one continent. Maybe Asia because they're already going for it. Let the rest of the world mellow out and kick it in peace.

Id take that challenge.... "cult" mormonism is crazy man.. you wouldnt believe a lot of the mainstream beliefs.. It really is a very secretive religion for how public it is and so people never hear about a lot of the things they believe.

eh, doesnt sound any crazier than the stuff your typical bible/quran/torah thumpers think. Folks that take their relgious texts literally instead of metaphorically are generally the ones ruining this world.

Yeah id agree. Its definitly not any crazier, just different. A lot of it is a sick miscarriage between science and religion they attempt to pass as psudo-doctrine.

However, a lot of it is unbeknownst to the public which i would say is the difference..

For sure. Most Americans are christians but the ones that take it word for word literally. I grew up in that type of church.

I mean you have Noah, a guy that god told to build a huge boat so he could kill everyone else with a big flood and then noah and his family could inbreed the earth again. If he could have somehow built that boat, and magically gotten all species from all continents(because no evolution) and somehow didn't get eaten by lions or anything, it still doesn't work.

Jonah. Dude disobeys God so God sends a huge storm, Jonah jumps off the boat and get's swallowed by a big fish and spit out 3 days later where he was originally supposed to have gone.

It's not so hard to believe if you've heard it since you were months old, been taught it before you could read, and had it repeatedly drilled in/you're going to go to hell if you ask questions. But as soon as you look at things even a little objectively the literal belief if not the whole belief crumbles pretty quickly.

its not a hardship at all, and i'm not on my own. i work hard to support my recreation and my health, we all chip in.
