Your experience with center mount pow skis.

well, ive ridden some 106 underfoot at center on a pow day, and then my friends majic js mounted at center on a light pow day.

so the 106 underfoot are supposed to be a all mtn pow ski that are mostly camber, i do have to say i hated them in pow, super catchy edges, really just no fun, by quads were burning. so then i switched over to my symetrical rockered park ski and they did tons better.

as for the majic j i loved them and felt like i could take on anything. i jibbed, charged through chunder, ect.

so if youre going wider with more rocker you would be ok mounting center, but if the ski is more directional and cambered i would go more like -2 or so . what skis have you been looking at? i know my friend mounted some on3p jeronimos at center and he loves them for everything

I think for pow minus 2 is the best. I have skied moment ghost chants at center and they were super turny and twitchy but that was probably mostly the ski and not the mount. Right now I have yles and ep pros both mounted at minus two and they handle really well. I can't really tell they are not symmetrical when I am trying to spin or jib. I think minus two is the way to go because at center mount pow skis often feel quite a bit worse and -2 isnt enough to make spins noticeably harder.

And to the OP, when it comes to pow sticks you really should be mounting on or very close to the factory recommended line, which is where the you'll be able to make the most out of your ski's sidecut. At any length beyond that mark you'll be effectively working against the ski when you turn which leads to less carving and more scchhmmeeeaarringg.

Wow no kidding? OP was asking about skis that rip everything, and he wants something that he can mount true center. The New Lifes 100 percent fit the bill.

centre mount works fine for some pow skis, but i mean if you're looking for a ski that does everything, with a bit of compromise everywhere, they compromise on the stance as well

i had this struggle with the jeffries i got mounted this year. I ended mounting them at -1.5 and i'm glad i did. The stance is awesome for all mountain and pow, but its still forward enough that i can duck into the park if i want

I have been looking at the Shreditor 112, The Benchetlers etc..
And as steezy.stew mentions here i don´t want to mount a ski to far from factory recommended.
So i definitely have to check out the Surface New Life. as it looks on the specs like a ski i´m looking for.

It´s no problem for me to have i little hard time doing the bigger lines. instead of strugglin to play with the ski..
I don´t express myself with speed.. hehe

You guys wanna give me some pointers on what skis i can choose from, considering the skis i mentioned here and what i wrote. Powder/all mountain skis with factory recommended mounting close to the center or of course center mounting.

I also wanna add that i´m going to be mounting a touring binding on these. Probably not the best skis to be touring on, but it´s the way down that counts. As for that i´m jumping back and forth between some good touring bindings from marker, salomon etc. And the CAST touring system, putting some Look px18 on them.

As far as my experience with bindings i don´t trust anything as much as the px18. Got some Salomon bindings on my park skis now, adjusted on the same DIN that i had my old px18 on, and they pre-release.. like my looks never would do.
So i´m thinking a touring binding can´t be better, more stable, less pre-release than a top of the line Salomon alpine binding?

Is the cast system worth it? since i can mount some real durable racing bindings on them.
And i don´t have to lift any of the binding while i´m walking up. comparing it to a normal touring binding where you really are "carrying" the whole binding. instead of just dragging it along, like you would with the CAST system

Personally I ride surface labs center mounted on the deep days and love the feeling. If you ride park a lot its nice to have a consistent stance when going ski to ski. However going back a cm or two doesn't hurt either, it's really just personal preference.

Rocker2 108 factory mount is really close to center (-3?). Those worked great for me when I demo'd them.

Yeah I just have to try and see. But with all the answers I´ve gotten here I now have a better idea for what sticks i´m going to charge with next season, ON REAL MOUNTAINS, ON REAL SNOW.. heheh

-2 for sure. Centered wouldnt be to much of a problem if you really wanted to though.

A mounting point close to center makes a lot of sense to me for fat skis. I have my YLEs mounted right at recommended which is just barely behind center and it has really felt good to me. I figured the experts did a lot of testing to decide on the mounting point so I looked for a ski with a recommended mounting point close to center.

And here comes the classic! I´m 183cm and ski park skis that are the same length. would 194cm skis be hard to manage through trees etc . theres a lot of rocker in pow skis nowadays so I figure my length + 10cm on skis would mean good stability and the rocker will still make the skis easy to slap around.

Or will skis with 115+ waist have so much flotation and still enough stability to choose a same length as myself ski?

center mount pow ski would be good for booters and stuff, but not quite as good for big lines. I personally mount around -3 cm and they rip at everything. just my 2 cents though

I'd lean towards the 194s, especially if you're going with a center mount. You want to be able to charge with em and not have to ride backseat to avoid tip dive. The other factors (turn radius, weight, flex, etc) will be much more noticeable than an extra 10cms of rocker, and if you're whipping around 183 in the park you shouldn't have a problem floating 194 in pow.

I had a pair of Line EP Pros (basically noodles) that I mounted at true center. They were heaps of fun and really maneuverable and stable in the air, but they had one major flaw.
When dropping off things into pow I had to land really, really back seat otherwise the tips would just fold up and I would land on my face. Even dropping off like a 3ft cornice would do it sometimes.
I guess the design of the ski will come into it a lot - if they have quite a directional design and relatively stiff tips you can be very forward because the tail will sink faster - the EP Pros were basically the opposite of this and that's why I had issues.

If anyone wants YLE DO NOT MOUNT CENTER! The recommended is there for a reason. The actually dimensions are symertrical, but there is slight taper, which makes the ski not 100% symmetrical. They ride super great at recommended
