I need my car to pass safety and emissions HELP

Alright so here's the deal. I've been working on getting my old VW Westfalia running and it's running like a champ now. Problem is my exhaust system doesn't have a cat and I really don't want to pay to get it added into the system. Im about 95% sure this things not gonna pass the emissions test here in Salt Lake City.

So my question for NS is has anyone had experience with taking their car up to Wasatch County to get it inspected? I know they don't have emission requirements up there so i'm hoping i can use my cousins address (they live in Heber) to get it to pass and then I can go get it registered.

So...
1) Can I just cruise up to Wasatch County and use my cousins address for inspection?
2) Can I just go to the DMV in Salt Lake once it passes inspection up there? Or do I need to get it registered at a DMV in Wasatch County?
3) I also need to get the title in my name, will having my address on the title throw off having my cousins address on the inspection?

I'm hoping someone will have been through a similar situation and can help me out with some tips.

How old is the car? You may not even have to get it inspected if its old enough.

Hes right. Almost did the same thing with my VW jetta a few months ago; Living in logan, was going to take my vehicle to box elder county. I got looking into it and unless it is a really unnecessary expensive fix, just spend the money and do it right.

1983, Anything newer than a 1968 needs emissions. I wish it were that simple!

Haha that definitely solves the long term issue. Problem is i have the 50 bucks to get it inspected but i don't have the $600 it will cost to have a cat put into the exhaust system. Trying to find a quick cheap fix for now.

Wow thats kinda nuts in illinios my brother doesn't even have to do any of that stuff on his 91 vehicle.

Dude honestly just buy a used cat from someone and do it yourself. I dont get how people are like omg 600$ for a cat. You can get one for mad cheap used and it fucking bolts on.

Make it a cutout. Leave the exhaust on the back. They test emissions on the rear of the car, nothing coming out. Car passes.

but it's illegal to install a used cat, you wouldn't suggest he do something illegal, would you?

buy a new one OP, the federal government, epa, and westfalia dealer will thank you

Last summer I had the same problem with getting an 89' Westfalia to pass an emissions test in Ontario. Without a cat it would be pretty much impossible here. But things to do that help it burn cleaner: everything ignitions related pretty much. New cap, rotor, wires, plugs. Those make some of the biggest difference. Then making sure it's not burning too rich, so the air/gas mixture is right. Running through some injector cleaner should help too.

Also here you need a curbside emissions and a running emissions. The curbside NOx and CO levels are normally what fail an older vehicle. In an older vehicle the meter is just put into the exhaust pipe rather than hooked up to car computer so it doesn't know the revs. If the running emissions is first then you're revving the car at maybe 2,400 for the duration then you're supposed to let it idle for the curbside, but if you keep the car revving high for the first 1/2 of the curbside it skews down the NOx and CO levels to hopefully pass. Just the word on the street.

Just go get a bolt on cat. do it right it will be less stressfull and pass. Make sure our ignition system is right on, plugs, rotor cap etc. change your oil... set your timing etc. just do it right.

omg next youll be telling kids smoking reefer is ok!

odds are they don't check smog in your state like utah, computer checks are easy to pass

but OP be aware if you do find a used cat most shops won't install it so it is a diy project

it is literally a 2 bolt flange on either side.....

are you sure it's literally not 3?

some people aren't diy people, which is why i was letting him know most shops won't install used cats the same as junkyards wont sell them.

Depends where the car is registered. Here in Colorado my boyfriend registers his cars at his dads house in unincorporated Larimer county to avoid emissions tests.

How old is it? In some states your collector plates can get you out of emissions tests for 5 years at a time so.

You could just get a cat put on it, take it off and sell it.

go to rose park, find the sketchiest looking shop and offer than an extra $100 to pass it. literally that easy. how do you think everybody with a straight pipe on their car passes each year?
