Foam Rollers.

Anyone use them? I am looking into getting one because my IT band and hamstrings are usually tight as hell. Can't figure out which one to get, found this combo one, but I feel like it is too small, not wide enough.

This one is 13 inches wide

Or I can get either the high density or nobby one that are wider. I really don't wanna buy two, but I figured the combo one gives both and avoids the decision.

Anyone have experience with these? What do you use?

if your tight that knobby one would hurt pretty bad... personally have a Trigger Point Performance one called The Grid and its a medium density with plastic instead of solid so when you travel it doesn't take up so much room. i would buy it but i mean any foam roller will do the same effects when used correctly.

LOVE cracking my spine with these things.

Get both, the smooth one is a good-hurt, the knobbly one is a therapeutic-hurt. We know you like em 13 inches wide too.

I've got a one of the short Trigger Point rollers and it's great. Definitely pricier, but it's held up to my 280lb frame without losing shape at all. Would definitely recommend it.

I have a few fancy ones, like the rumble roller, but the best one is an 18in piece of 6in diameter PVC pipe with athletic tape crossing it like on a hockey stick. cheap too.

if you get a lot of knots, just use a golfball or lacrosse ball. hurts a lot, but gets everything out

Lacrosse ball is key, I use a fairly soft foam roller (the blue ones) and a pvc tube after I'v warmed myself up on the lower density. Never used a roller with ridges and grooves. Main thing is to remain as relaxed as possible and breath while you're rolling and any roller will be effective.

foam rollers are awesome. i'd start with a standard high density, but would go bigger than 13". the bigger the better imo

Yo fuck that, time to cut the shit. Get yoga tune up balls, and some mobility wod products. You will cringe at how you thought lacrosse balls and foam rollers actually did anything.

I work at a running specialty store so we sell a lot of this stuff, if you want a foam roller, I recommend anything by Pro-Tec or Trigger Point. to be honest, you really only need the foam cylinder, the nobs and plastic don't really do anything, they are just to look fancier so people spend more money.

I lived on these things while rowing and the best ones are pvc pipes with a neoprene sleeve covering the outside. Otherwise get a high density foam one, but the softer ones don't really do anything. You will probably want something wider than 13" to roll your lower back and shoulder blades

You can also use a lacrosse or softball between the tight area and the floor and work it around flexing and relaxing the muscles on the ball. It'll hurt like a motherfucker but focus on relaxing and breathing and it'll help loosen you up a ton

Build your own.

Cut a 8" piece of PVC pipe and wrap it with a cheap yoga mat. If you want it aggressive, only use one wrap. If you need it a little more forgiving, use several.

I see this sort of thing at Ross Dress for Less for less than what it will cost to buy your own. I think that's where we got ours. Don't have the knobs but it seems to help. I keep forgetting to use it though so thanks for the reminder.

I have one of the generic black foam ones, I really like it, mostly for my back, but legs too. I think mine is 16" or 18", I've used the 3ft ones, didn't seem to be a lot better. As far as the knobbed ones, I don't do those often, only after a more intense workout, and usually after starting with the regular one. The knob ones can be too much if you aren't used to rolling/don't do it regularly. The black high density is good, pink (or other low density) can feel nice, but I find it too soft.
